Today we’d like to introduce you to Jon Sinclair.
Jon, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I played professional golf for 7 years in the 90’s. I then decided I wanted to teach golf for a living. My wife Sheri Sinclair and I started a little range in Cleburne, Texas. It was truly a “Tin Cup” type of driving range. Even though it was in a small town and was a true “hole in the wall” we were able to make a go of it. I started teaching all types of players from the professional level to the beginner lesson. During our time there, I became one of 3 Master GolfPsych Instructors in the world. I worked closely with Dr. Deborah Graham and her husband Jon Stabler as a player and as a coach. I have been with them for 20 years now. This really helped me separate myself from other coaches and helped get me into doors that were previously not possible. During our time in Cleburne, I also developed a great club fitting business and we became one of the top sellers in the entire DFW metroplex for both Ping and Callaway.
After being in Cleburne for 6 years, I got the opportunity to bring GolfPsych up to Fort Worth and help open the Jim McLean Golf Center.
This took me on a completely new path. A lot of hard work went into that and I was able to meet some great people that I still have relationships with today. Two people I met there stand out. My friend, who is a Physical Therapist, Jeff Banaszak taught me about the body and how the golf swing effects it. The second person is Dr. Robert Neal. Doc is one of the top Bio-Mechanist in all of golf. His 3D system allowed me to look at the swing in ways I never thought was possible. I had always resisted all the technology for teaching golf and this finally gave me a way that made sense. He did not realize the effect he had on me. I went crazy and sought out different technologies to help me see the swing better. I bought a Trackman launch monitor to see the club and the ball, a SAM PuttLab and SAM BalanceLab so I could see the putter in 3D and see the vertical pressure a player would push into the ground and an AMM 12 sensor 3D system to see the full body. Doc Neal’s system allowed me to see the pelvis, torso and arms, but I wanted the whole body. I sought out another Bio-Mechanist Dr. Phil Cheetham who had a system I could digitize and see the whole body. Being at the McLean Center did not really allow me to go on the journey I wanted. I needed to learn what all of this new and interesting data meant, so my wife and I decided to build our own facility again. This is where we are now, the Sinclair Golf Training Center at Texas Star. Texas Star and the City of Euless were a perfect fit for me and my new venture. Jeff Banaszak is a PT on the PGA Tour and we started working together capturing data of Tour Players and helping them and their coaches see the swing in a new light. This plus all the tour players I worked with gave me one of the most sought-after databases in the entire world. I now work with over 40 PGA Tour Players and several Web.com, LPGA and other professional all around the world. I have added a Gears 3D System where I can see what the club and shaft are doing throughout the swing. I have also been consulting with a shaft company in Switzerland called TPT Golf. This shaft we have been working on the last 2 years is now hitting the market and the Tour with a big bang! Justin Rose has won 3 of the last 6 events he has played since putting it in his bag. I have also introduced the shaft to several other PGA, LPGA and college players from around the world.
This is one of the most exciting things that I have seen in golf. I am very pleased with everything that is going on right now, we are also in the process of launching an online academy for people to join from anywhere in the world. Very exciting times at Sinclair Golf right now for sure!
I hope this is enough for you. This was a very short version of the last 25 years of our life getting to this point. One last point I was awarded the North Texas PGA Teacher of the Year in 2017.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Of course, there are challenges and struggles on every road. But with perseverance and support, we overcome all the come our way. I learn from all of them and then put them aside. I walk the walk I teach my players and once I have learned the lesson I move on. I prefer to only stay on the positive side of my mind and let troubles stay in the past. I also try to see troubles that might come our way in the future to be prepared and not surprised.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
There is one that stands out completely and it is about my hero and Grandfather. My Grandfather who help my Mother and Grandmother raise me and 2 brothers. My Grandfather was the most perfect human being of all time if you let him tell the story. He never once made a mistake in his entire life. He walked uphill in the snow both ways from school in the snow for crying out loud! We were once at the Cowboys game at the old Texas Stadium. After the game, we were all walking to the car. As we approached the car we noticed the lights were on but very dim. Immediately my brothers and I started jumping around screaming “Grandad made a mistake! Grandad made a mistake!” “Well” he said as we all piled in the car laughing having the best time with him reaching to put the key in the ignition. As the car started and all of our mouths dropped open he said, “I was just testing my Die Hard battery! Grandad’s never make mistakes!” Silence and amazement all the way home.
