Today we’d like to introduce you to Jon Waltz.
Jon, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Our story and the road that leads to where we are today is paved with blood, sweat, and tears like so many others who have chased the American dream to business ownership. I started in the industry back in the late 90’s working for my father’s company renovating pools. I enjoyed working outside and the change that came with each project being different. Fast forward a few years with four kids to feed, and some experience under my belt, I launched my own company in the DFW area. We grew organically over the years adding services such as swimming pool construction, weekly chemical maintenance, and moving from subcontracting to bringing the majority of the work we offered in-house. And with that growth came joy and pain.
(Failure is the condiment that gives success its flavor) In those early years of growth, we tried a lot of new products and new services, we made a lot of mistakes and had our fair share in failures. We experienced a lot of financial loss in our search for success, most admittedly by our own mistakes and decisions, and yet some by the decisions of others. As the business moved on, and we struggled to stay afloat, I really started to lose interest in a lot of the services we offered, I wasn’t happy where we were and felt totally defeated after so many years of hard work. Something had to change, we desperately needed change.
(A decision had to be made) Early on in the business, I found a passion in pool plastering, the sound of the pool plaster pump moving material, and the specialty foot cleats clanging on the pool surface was crazy enough music to my ears. I loved every aspect of it, the hand craftsmanship involved, the teamwork, the specialty equipment, even the technical side peaked my interest. So a little over a year ago, with change desperately needed, I made the decision to follow my passion and to close everything else down. And that is essentially where Lonestar Tile & Plaster was born, the company was founded on loss, pain, mistakes, learning, and change. What we experienced, and the foundation that was built on hardship has given us a strength to overcome anything and a renewed sense of purpose and drive that has been meet with hard-earned success. “Choices and Decisions must be supported by your passion, resolve, and a productive work ethic. If these meet opportunity – your success has finally come!” Archibald Marwizi.
(Pool plastering is our craft, not just our trade) Pool plastering is truly our craft, not just our trade, the dictionary defines craftsmanship as the quality of design and work shown in something made by hand, We get the chance to work and form with our hands daily bringing designs to life with texture and color. And there is just a deep sense of satisfaction shaping something with your hands, and getting to do it for a living. “No man needs sympathy because he has to work, because he has a burden to carry. Far and Away the best prize that life has to offer is the chance to work hard at work worth doing.” Theodore Roosevelt
Currently, we offer pool finishing services in both new pool construction and swimming pool renovation. Swimming pool tile, coping, and pool plastering / resurfacing is our specialty and our passion. I would say 90% of the work we do is as a subcontractor serving pool construction and service companies. But we still love to work direct with homeowners. We are a small family-owned business made up of three generations of pool builders, and we look forward to seeing what the future brings.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
We specialize in swimming pool tile, coping, and pool plastering/resurfacing.
What were you like growing up?
Let’s not talk about that, lol, I wasn’t the greatest kid growing up, lol. I did always have an interest in entrepreneurship, my grandfather was a businessman and owned Lewisville Rental Center for a little over 40 years. I started working summers for him at 12 years old and he taught me a great deal about work ethic. He always told me the secret to being rich was really simple, “earn more or desire less.” that always stuck with me, lol.. He was a hard-working man and a true role model in both his professional and personal life. I really looked up to him, he was a businessman, but more importantly, a family man, he married his high school sweetheart and had four children, my mother being one of them. Crazy similarities, the wife and I are high school sweethearts, we married at 17 and 20 and had our first of four children the year we got married. My wife and children have been my life for so long, its hard to imagine a time without them in my life.
