Today we’d like to introduce you to Jordan Filloon.
Jordan, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I grew up in hair salons. My mom was a hairstylist in her younger years and some of my earliest memories are of sitting under the dryer watching her cut hair. She was always experimenting on me and my sister — there’s definitely photographic evidence of her giving me a perm when I was five! Fast forward to me at 20, the single mom of a 2-year-old and tired of dead-end jobs working for other people. I attended Toni & Guy Academy and worked in a corporate-owned salon for a few years before I decided they were taking too much of my money, so I decided to rent out a salon suite and work for myself. I’ve always been independent and headstrong and wanted to do things my own way, and being able to schedule work around my life instead of the other way around was ideal. Recently I decided it was time to pursue my dream of being a salon owner so I rented out this amazing Victorian-style building in Addison and with a little blood and a lot of sweat (think no A/C in July!) and tears it became 972 Salon & Luxury Suites.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely not! When I was younger and just starting out working for myself, my income was unpredictable. With no steady paycheck, it was often feast or famine and that combined being a single mom led to some major struggles. Renovating an old building into a modern salon was an even bigger task than I had anticipated. Burst pipes, wrong paint colors, no A/C in July — the list goes on. Sometimes I thought, “What have I gotten myself into?!” but after many long days and nights, it all came together.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
I’m known for classic hair executed flawlessly — I love a good bob. I have many loyal clients that have been with me since the very beginning and are more like family now. At 972 I’m all about creating a diverse co-working environment for entrepreneurs in the beauty industry; I have amazingly talented tenants covering hair, makeup, lashes and brows. I’m also a huge proponent of ongoing education and will be hosting an array of different classes open to anyone in the industry, as well as classes for clients (feel like you’re not using the right hairbrush or hair products? Bring them in and let’s upgrade you!).
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Above all, being a people person! My clients love me and vice versa, and having the opportunity to work alongside other professionals in the beauty industry motivates me to be better every day. And I definitely wouldn’t be where I am now without my stubborn determination and always insisting on doing things my own way!
