Meet Jordan Hoover of Urban Thrift in Lake Highlands

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jordan Hoover.

Jordan, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was working on IT for Pepsi, when I decided that I just couldn’t sit at a desk any more. I decided on opening a thrift store because I’d always enjoying thrifting and finding unique items.

I’ve also resold things on eBay since 2001, and found that I’ve really enjoyed that process. I like work hard, so I figured that I could put this place together no matter how tough it was. And it was tough. As much as I thought I knew, there was just as much as I didn’t know. There were so many aspects I would’ve never thought to consider! The Lord was very gracious with me and taught me each step of the way. Each time something came up that I had no idea how to handle, He would lead me in a direction that helped me solve it. Step by step I learned and built this into a well-oiled machine.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
No, it has not been a smooth road. The most difficult things have been learning how to budget, how to advertise, how to organize all the things that get donations, how to fit the furniture in the store, how to dispose of things that need to go, how to schedule pickups and who’s going to do what and when, all while keeping costs as low as possible. There are SO MANY moving parts, the logistics can be overwhelming.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Urban Thrift – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I’m most proud when we’re able to serve our community and be a blessing to our neighborhood.

I grew up here in Lake Highlands, so this community means a lot to me. We’re known for taking EVERYTHING. We pickup stuff we can’t even sell, just so we can get it out of their way and be a blessing to the people. We also work with a problem with RISD where we have a special needs student volunteer here for work experience. Lastly, we write checks to local organizations.

Several times a year, we send checks to programs at the high school, local churches and neighborhood associations. This month we sent $3000 to a church in Galveston that’s helping with hurricane relief.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Our plans for the future is to find a bigger space! We need more square footage, so in some form or fashion we need to expand.
