Today we’d like to introduce you to Jordan Washington.
Jordan, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I am originally from Baton Rouge, LA. I fell in love with styling hair at a young age of ten years old. I was intrigued with constantly changing my own hair and experimenting with styles. I seemed to be a natural and those around me would say I had “blessed hands”. I continued to do my friends and family’s hair for several years until I finally decided to pursue it professionally. I began as an apprentice in 2011 in Baton Rouge to get familiar with the business side of the industry.
Shortly after I became a licensed stylist. I continued for about three years even spending a bulk of that time being the only female in a barber shop. This ambitiously helped me decide to open my own salon, True Royalty. Being a salon owner is an experience that brought on several ups and down, all of which are appreciated. I wouldn’t change anything about it. Being in a small city, I always felt something was missing, or that there was more out there that I could do with my craft. I aspired to become more diverse and ultimately expand. I considered many different places and decided to move to Dallas. I had visited several times, have family here, and also some clients. I knew that Dallas was a great place to relocate toward my goals. I’ve been in Dallas for approximately eight months and although there has been some pros and cons, I’ve welcomed the challenge.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Absolutely not. Starting any business takes serious dedication and perseverance. I’ve experienced many obstacles along the way. Maintaining a business takes double the perseverance of starting a business, but I had to stay the course. In a constantly changing industry, it is imperative to stay ahead of the needs of many different client preferences. I have to continuously, proactively nurture my craft in order to thrive in being in professional stylist. Stepping out of my comfort zone of having constant clientele was by far the hardest struggle. Although I had a few clients here in Dallas, it was a drastic difference from being constantly booked like before moving. I have made great use of social networks to help promote myself which has helped smooth the transition.
Please tell us about True Royalty Salon and Barber Studio.
I am the owner of True Royalty. True Royalty is not only known as a studio that specializes in hair styling but is also a brand that will be passed on to my children and their own. I am most proud of the authenticity I offer my clients through skill. True Royalty provides an experience that leaves my clients feeling welcomed, appreciated, like family, and most importantly, royalty. This also sets me apart from others. I offer a signature service that specializes in extensions, hair coloring, healthy hair care, and also my very own crafted styles. I can confidently yet humbly express the uniqueness in my skill as a stylist and promise satisfaction.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Nothing at all! I wouldn’t change a thing! Every experience, whether good or bad, has fostered my growth as a stylist and business owner.
