Meet Joshua Wright

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joshua Wright.

Hi Joshua, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
My story starts in early 2018. I had been on staff at a church for about 3 years and found myself without fulfillment in my career choice. One weekend in early April 2018, I was invited into a conversation of joining a small music studio called Legacy Music Studio. When the invitation was extended, I met the offer with hesitancy. Having trained vocally for 8 years, there had been little to no thought of being equipped to develop other vocalists. Thankfully, the owner, Jenny James, saw the potential and took a chance on me. I started with one student for a 6-week journey. In those lessons, I was in awe of the growth vocally and my ability to teach in a way that felt like second nature. Four and half years later, I’ve worked with 100+ students, kids, and adults and been able to see them experience great success in their musical endeavors.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
If I said it was smooth sailing, that would be a complete lie haha. When I made the choice to dive head first into this new career, I quickly learned that it would require sacrifice. Some of those included financial comfortability, extended-late hours, and my pride. During the first two years, I lost two main sources of income and had to return to a restaurant job I worked in college. It wasn’t until the beginning of 2020 that I was able to finally leave that restaurant job. But then March hit and we all know what happened then – a mix of isolation, online lessons, and poor Wi-Fi connections on zoom. In all of the struggles, I learned a lot about patience and self-belief when you’re past the starting line but haven’t seen the finish just yet. I also learned that no matter how long the journey may be, it does not make you a failure. It really shows you how determined you are.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Currently, I am a private vocal coach and an active singer/songwriter/musician in the DFW Metroplex. Within teaching voice, my main focus is help students of all ages master basic techniques, find their voice, and challenge them to take risks by trying new things. More than that, I love being able to build relationships and encourage my students that nothing is truly impossible when they invest their time and believe in themselves.

When it comes to pursuing my own music career, I’m half of a band called Vigil – a local pop; alternative pop; worship; contemporary Christian; soul music duo. Currently, we have released a few songs titled “Rescue” and “What You Came For”. Adding to that, we have been an opening act for Sounds of Lewisville Concert Series 2021 and 2022. Outside of Vigil, I have been featured on eight albums, and five singles. In 2019 and 2020, I was invited to privately audition for the executive producers of American Idol and another show on the Fox Network. Within the realm of songwriting, I have co-written 50+ songs over the last six years. As of early 2022, I was accepted into Artisan Writers – a place for writers living without an artistic expression to come together, [learn together], and create.

Within the different arenas of influence, I’m involved in, I’m known for being an encourager, someone who believes in developing others and chasing my dreams with the support of those who do life with me daily. I believe these qualities also set me apart because I lead with empathy and refuse to leave others behind no matter what.

Any big plans?
When it comes to plans for the future, I simply plan to focus on growth. Over the last year, I was able to invest in so many students musically and experienced a great amount of visibility within the DFW area. I’m looking forward to continue on that journey of developing the next generation of performers and create a space for people who feel like they don’t belong.

Within my own music career, my bandmate Morgan and I are preparing to release a new song called “Manifest” and an EP (extended play) in the new year. We are currently performing in different wine houses, breweries, and larger venues in DFW.
