Meet Jourdyn Moore

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jourdyn Moore.

Jourdyn, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Jourdyn Moore is a make-up artist based in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Her resume includes beauty, fashion, film, and special effects make-up. In Jourdyn’s 7+ year career in the makeup industry, she has had the pleasure and honor to work for MAC Cosmetics, Nordstrom Beauty, Glamorous Chicks Cosmetics, and The Makeup Show Dallas. Before entering the cosmetics industry, Jourdyn was represented by the Clutts Agency for both modeling and acting. She has competed in beauty pageants, as well as cheered professionally in both the CHL and NBA G-league. Her background and experience create a unique style that characterizes her artistic talent.

During my time as a professional cheerleader, I realized how much of a knack I had for beauty and makeup. I attended a job fair for MAC Cosmetics, and upon a successful interview and application demo on a model, I was hired starting my career in the beauty industry!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Being a makeup artist and a college graduate, I have struggled with the balance of using my degree, or, following my passion and artistry for makeup. Right now I enjoy both, the career I have as an event planner and being able to create beautiful applications for my clients. I wake up early, stay up late, work weekends and holidays and make both careers a reality!

Tell us more about your work.
One of the highlights of my career has been being the makeup artist for Olympian Gabby Douglas. I am such a fan of hers as an athlete and now I can say I am a fan of hers as a person! She was so sweet on set, Gabby gave me her own “Mattel Gabby Douglas Barbie Collector Pink Label” doll and “Beauty Bakerie x Gabby” lip stain set. She is such a one of a kind gem!

I have provided makeup services to hundreds of others, from bridal services to the graduating senior, bat mitzvah and quinceañera to maternity, boudoir, and date night.

I am known for being able to create multi-racial looks of all ages. I not only consider your skin tone, hair color & eye color, but also the colors of your outfits along with the location and the types of light sources present. As a professional, I know what products to use, where to use them & in what intensity to ensure you look great for every occasion!

Surprisingly, there are no legal regulations or licenses required to be a professional makeup artist in the state of Texas. That means ANYONE can say they are a “professional.” But what separates the actual professionals from the “self-proclaimed” ones…

Experience expands to know what products to use and in what intensity for each skin type, eye shape, and occasion. This is learned through time and practice as well as dedication to perfect one’s craft. If you look at a person’s portfolio or Instagram and primarily see selfies, you may want to consider another artist. Look beyond Instagram and into the artist’s actual client portfolio. Yes–Their own makeup may be stunning and flawless BUT you cannot assume they can do your makeup just because they have followers and a few selfies (PS: you can buy followers nowadays–be on the lookout for phonies!)

Sanitation is something that is learned through working in a professional environment or by obtaining a license. By working in a store, counter, salon, etc, corporate trainers will teach the artists proper codes and guidelines to protect their customers. Quick Tip: If a makeup artist blows on lash to dry the lash glue before applying a lash strip, they most likely do not know proper sanitation procedures. Also be on the lookout for cleaning eyeliners and lipliners before application, as well as using disposable lipgloss wands and mascara spoolies. You don’t want to get a pink eye or a cold sore because of a lack of training!

Have you ever heard the expression “Good & cheap won’t be fast, fast & good won’t be cheap, cheap & fast won’t be good”? This is 110% true! You get what you pay for in all areas of life, so why would you expect any difference when searching for an artist? A quality makeup artist should also have a well-prepared kit that includes premium products and skincare for a long-lasting, worthwhile application–Don’t be afraid to ask the artist for their brand preference, references, reviews, or a link to their portfolio BEFORE booking.

A true professional will set expectations about their services thoroughly upfront. Whether they require a deposit, contract for services, or a bridal trial, a professional will be clear and able to properly communicate the possibilities as well as limitations in a makeup application. This also means the artist will arrive on time, be prepared, and even be prepared for the unpredictable in certain cases, like perhaps a sunburn or zit on the day of an event.

It is important to RESEARCH anyone you are interested in hiring. One of the greatest benefits of hiring a makeup artist is how it will help you be stress-free. Hiring a professional makeup artist to travel to your home, hotel, or venue to beautify you; will allow you to not only save time on traveling but also will prevent the stress of traveling back and forth when you should be relaxing and enjoying the occasion! It truly will make a difference in your demeanor and overall attitude on a busy and hectic special occasion or photo shoot. Most importantly, it will be one less thing for you to worry about.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and work?
I truly believe in the quote: Luck happens when preparation meets opportunity. I have been told “No” enough times in my life to be able to assess the situation, realize my failures, and modify my plan in order to find success.
