Today we’d like to introduce you to Juan Botero.
Hi Juan, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
I’m a musician. I’ve lived in Dallas for the majority of my life, however, I now live in Boston, where I attend Berklee College of Music. I decided I wanted to do music in high school after having done some performances alongside some of my close friends in the local Rockwall area. After high school, I attended Richland College for 2 years, where I honed my craft and prepared myself for my Berklee audition, which had always been my goal, ever since attending a summer camp there in 2018. Being in Boston has helped me grow a lot as a person and musician, and at some point, I want to take some time to enter into the Dallas music scene in places like Deep Ellum and Bishop arts.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Challenge on your path is usually the best way of knowing that you’re headed in the right direction. I’ve been fortunate enough thus far to not have faced anything life-changing; however, the path of a musician always carries its fair share of self-doubt, difficulty, and disillusionment; however, I believe it is part of the journey to fight through these things and to break those walls because everything that is better is on the other side.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a singer-songwriter, drummer, arranger, and producer. I’ve been releasing music consistently for the past 3 years, and I’ve also begun to play live shows fairly regularly in the last year. I like to think people know me for my music, singing, and drumming. One thing I do that sets me apart is that I sing and play drums at the same time during my live show, something only done by a few artists, like Phil Collins and Anderson Paak.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
People are pretty surprised by my leadership style. I am of the philosophy that the best way to lead is to bring out the best in your team, and through that, whatever you do will be successful. I apply this philosophy in my live band leadership, and because of this, we play very wonderfully together, and the music that we make is extremely high level.
