Today we’d like to introduce you to Juan Perez.
Juan, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started painting out of a need for having unique shoes that couldn’t be found anywhere else. It started off as something to do but when I ruptured my Achilles, I had more time on my hands since I was on bedrest. As a result of that, I got serious about it when I received requests from others to paint on their shoes. Once I saw that other people wanted custom shoes, I realized that not only was there a market for it but it was also something I really loved to do.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road has been somewhat smooth because this is something I do after my 9-5. Some of my struggles along the way have been figuring out what is the ideal paint product to use that will last on the sneakers. I’m not very good at freehand drawing, so I had to be creative about how to get the imagery onto the shoe. Through trial and error, I found stencils and vinyl cutters really help in that regard.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Juanchies Kicks – what should we know?
Juanchieskicks is a business that is known for specializing in customized shoes. I run the gamut from sneakers to sports cleats and everything in between. I’ve occasionally dabbled in other items too such as Yeti cups, boxing gloves, and I once customized a shotgun stock. I’m proud that Juanchieskicks brings other people’s ideas to life on a shoe. I think Juanchieskicks stands apart from others because I’m willing to work on canvases other than shoes.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I’m very passionate about my craft. My work ethic is also very important for my success and I collaborate well with my clients to achieve their vision.
