Today we’d like to introduce you to Judy Mackey,
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
Although I did take art lessons while a teen-ager, I didn’t pick up the paintbrush until Mid-life crisis struck in 2004. I was living in Southlake at the time and picked up our local neighborhood newspaper and saw an ad for Painting lessons. After a few months of lessons, I also signed up for lessons from a local Grapevine artist, Francoise Arenas who painted with the palette knife, which is what I also paint with.
I currently live in The Woodlands, which is just north of Houston but I do travel to DFW now and then as I still own property in Grapevine. Grapevine has a thriving group of galleries and artists – that’s where I started so I feel a connection there.
Please tell us about your art.
I paint impressionist paintings with oil mainly with the palette knife. I keep details at a minimum so that the viewer can get into the painting and make-up their own stories. I do paint a lot of angles, pet portraits, and florals.
I particularly like the angels because many of my collectors find solace in them although some of my angels do have attitude. A lot of my commissioned work consists of angels and of pet portraits.
Do you have any advice for other artists? Any lessons you wished you learned earlier?
To sell art, one has to be seen. Use the social Medias, blog, and website to get your art in front of as many eyes as possible. The biggest lesson is don’t compare. Everyone has their own voice. My style isn’t for everyone and that’s okay.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
I am represent by the Dutch Art Gallery on Northwest Hwy in Dallas (Lake Highlands area). I also show online at www.Ugallery.com and www.Artfinder.com.
I sell from my own website and off my Facebook pages.
