Meet Judy Mitchell of Record Setter in Denton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Judy Mitchell.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Judy. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
We started forever ago just as a two-piece with me and my brother in late 2011. We were a different band then, but yeah. Kyle, our guitarist, joined in 2012/13 sometime playing bass and then Jake joined as the actual bassist in maybe 2014. We played a lot of local shows for a few years back then and then fizzled out and didn’t play a show for over a year. I started planning to move out of state, and the band decided to do one last EP or something before I left, so we wrote what became Purge, which we released in 2017. That record was a lot of fun to write and perform, and more people cared about that than anything we’d done before, so we decided to keep going a while longer to see what happened. I ended up releasing a split in 2019 with some of our best friends in Genius Christ and Sylvania Ave from Denton. We’re Trying Records helped us with that release, and they’re so sick.

Quickly after releasing Purge though, I had started writing our first full-length album, which we just finished recording recently. I think that there is a sonic shift here between what we’ve released prior, but I think it is a natural extension of what makes us sound like us.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not smooth or even conscious. We’ve just been a local band, and nothing more for so long it feels weird for anyone to take notice of what we’re doing. The darkest period of the band was that year we weren’t playing shows and had pretty much called it quits. I was going through a lot personally and that was the year leading up to me realizing my gender identity issues and coming to terms with the extent of my dysphoria for the first time ever. It’s time I would never want to revisit and am very glad to be past it.

Record Setter – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Loud. All I want to be is loud and oppressive. We had the opportunity to play with someone who I super respect back in 2018, and he watched our set, which was cool, and after he told us to “keep being sonically punishing.” That stuck to me, and it has been the primary goal since he said to me that. When we wrote Purge, it was the first time we utilized dynamics in any real way. Kind of went toward a more loud/soft structure, and I think we’ve continued that trend with the new material coming. It was a very conscious effort on my part to try and jam as much contrast as possible into it. loud/soft, fast/slow, hopeful/angry etc..

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
The release show we played for the three-way split was probably the best show we’ve ever had. Was awesome.
