Meet Julia Ponce of JulesPonce Photography

Today we’d like to introduce you to Julia Ponce.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started my love affair with photography shortly after my first child was born. I wanted so badly to capture every little fleeting moment I could and document it with an image that I could soak up later and bring me back to that feeling I had when the image was captured. It wasn’t long until I became addicted to capturing those moments and friends started to notice.

I began shooting friends and family until word of mouth catapulted me into the business I have now. That led me to shoot not just families but people in so many chapters of their life. From engagements and weddings to newborns and birthdays. Everyone has a story and I have the honor of helping them tell it through photos. It’s now five years later with countless families and so many unique stories, and I wouldn’t trade it for the world.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I would LOVE to say it has been smooth sailing 100% of the time, but sadly that is not life. For me, the struggle has always been finding the balance between my business and my home life. I have always had the type of work ethic that causes me to throw myself completely into my job, and that has only multiplied now that my work is also my way of expressing myself.

This means lots of late nights editing and lots of free time spent sending out galleries and emails. Then, I am onto my main job of being a mom to (in my opinion) the two best kids a lady could ask for. It can be a lot to juggle, but what mom can’t say their life is a juggling act? However, over the years, I have found how to be easier on myself and allow myself a few days off to just relax and take a break.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
I specialize in families and couples sessions. I also photograph weddings, newborns/maternity, boudoir, product and the occasional “for me” styled session. I shoot it all, but families are what really have my heart. Nothing beats a mom and dad in love and the giggles of the tiny little people they helped create together.

I am most known for capturing images that tell a story in an organic way. I always shoot for “unposed poses” where I guide my models into real moments rather than forced poses. That along with my use of sunlight and my bright yet moody edits are what set me apart from others. I call myself a chaser of light and fly on the wall, this approach has led me to create some really magical images.

I am most proud of the experience I have created for my clients when it comes to shooting. I don’t want strained smiles staring down my lens. Instead with me, you get acoustic music playing while you giggle and play outside. I want my clients to walk away with more than just pictures for their frames, but a memory they can look back on.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was always outdoors and always loved art! I was either painting or hiking in the woods with the neighborhood kids. I would always tell my mother that one day when I grew up I would live in a treehouse and become an artist because, as six-year-old Jules would say “painting is my life!”

Little did I know, that in a way, I was right. The outdoors are now my office and I am what some of my other photog friends have described as a photoshop painter because of my editing style. I may not have the treehouse but I am an artist… even if my paintbrush is a mouse.
