Meet Julian Munoz of Dapper Digital in Fort Worth

Today we’d like to introduce you to Julian Munoz.

Julian, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started taking pictures the summer before my senior year in high school. I took it in a summer program just because I couldn’t take sports as an elective twice during the program. I was going through a difficult time around this time and was looking for a way to channel my emotions into something productive. I had always been interested in photography but never had the money to buy a camera. The great thing about the program was that they provided cameras for everyone. I learned how to shoot with film and learned how to develop it in a dark room. I remember developing my first roll of film and seeing being able to share what I saw. What I liked about photography was how you could capture the emotions that a person was conveying in that one moment. After the program ended, I ended up shifting my focus back to sports and graduating. It wasn’t until one night that I was out for some drinks with some new coworkers that I realized all I did was focus on work. They asked me what I like to do for fun and it wasn’t until after they told me drinking wasn’t a hobby that I realized I needed something else. I drunkenly ended up buying a camera that exact moment and three days later it arrived. I started taking pictures just for myself and not really sharing them except with my close friends and family. It wasn’t until I got the courage to start sharing my pictures that I started going on photo shoots with other photographers to learn. I then started to venture off on my own and started doing my own shoots.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I have been fortunate to have a smooth road but I owe it all to great friends and family members that help support me. Also, the photography community is amazing. I am always learning and amazed by the work the community puts out.

Please tell us about Dapper Digital.
I like to do portraits and candid photography. The reason I like to do both is that it allows me to help capture moments in people’s lives. I love that I can immortalize a fleeting moment, whether it be a kiss, a quick smile, or laughter, in a picture. I love to capture the feelings and emotions a person is feeling at that exact moment instead of it just being a memory.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I would have started earlier and have started to share my work more. It wasn’t until I started to share my work that I was able to learn, grow, and improve. I was scared of my work being criticized because I didn’t think it would be good enough. I still have that fear but I accept criticism as a way of improving. I still learn every day and wish I could have started learning sooner.
