Today we’d like to introduce you to Julie Costly.
Hi Julie, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I began practicing yoga in 2003. In 2014 I decided to go through the teacher training program offered by my studio. I enjoyed practicing yoga; teaching seemed like the next natural progression. I began working as the manager of that same studio in 2017. We survived through the pandemic, only to close our doors one year after re-open. We had built such a strong community that I could not let that go. I decided, at that point, I would open my own studio. The roller coaster ride had begun. Somedays, my vision seemed impossible, and others seemed like it was just within reach. My team and I pressed on and worked through many obstacles. In March 2023, Shine Fitness opened its’ doors in Flower Mound, Texas. Our vision is to create a welcoming space that is accessible to all fitness levels, all age levels, and diverse backgrounds. Group fitness is unique in the fact that the stronger the community, the more inspired and encouraged our students become. Then, it starts to grow from the inside. When a student walks through our doors, they will be greeted by name and made to feel right at home at Shine. Encourage, inspire, motivate, and love on people is what we do best! In a world that is quick to divide, we are here to unite and grow together. Having a space to come where people can better their physical, mental, and emotional health is what we aim to do. Come on and Shine with us! We love making new friends!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It was not an easy process. The original space we had chosen did not work out. We began looking for other options. We fell in love with our space at Parker Square the moment we walked in. After going through design plans, architects, and mechanical engineering plans, we were stunned at our costs for build-out. We had to walk away from that plan. The landlord at the time asked that we go back to the drawing board for a re-design. After months of planning and re-creating, we finally came up with a design that was both functional and aesthetically pleasing. Our landlords were very gracious and patient with us. Our construction began in November. Four months later, we opened our doors and welcomed our first students. We could not be more grateful for our community. It is exactly what we hoped for.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Shine Fitness encompasses fitness classes and yoga classes. We utilize infrared panels to heat our space for hot yoga. We have a beautiful open space with many windows and high ceilings. Our setting, with natural light and wide-open space, allows for students to come in and not feel crowded. Our fitness and yoga classes are accessible to all levels. We offer a Low Impact Interval Training and a High Intensity Interval Training. We understand the importance of weight training and incorporating functional movements. Our goal is to keep people healthy as they age. To be able to enjoy an active lifestyle, both now and after retirement. Our motto is, “If you are not moving, we will get you moving; if you are moving, we will keep you moving!” We incorporate many healthcare professionals as a part of our community. We host workshops with physical therapists, nutrionists and have just started a partnership with a functional medicine physician. We also invite other small businesses in the area to bring awareness to their businesses. We have partnered with restaurants, jewelry makers, wine sellers, and financial advisors. We also had great success with our first charity fundraising event in July. We want to be an integral part of the community, not a studio that expects the community to come to them, but a studio that goes out to the community.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
Boutique fitness studios are becoming much more popular. People are looking for a personal connection. Big box gyms do not offer that. We reach you on a personal level and plan activities to be sure that no one feels left out or not part of the group. Following the pandemic, people realized how important relationships and connecting with others on a personal basis really is. I see this trend becoming more popular and growing exponentially in the years to come.
