Today we’d like to introduce you to Kaley Medina.
Kaley, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My journey to becoming a Sleep Consultant began when I became a mother. Like many moms, when I was pregnant I received the advice “sleep now because once the baby arrives you won’t be sleeping again.” At the time I laughed it off. But once my daughter arrived, I found myself in that very situation. The only way I could get my daughter to sleep was to feed or rock her to sleep. Once she was finally asleep in my arms, I would gently place her in her crib and tip toe out of the room, only to have her wake shortly thereafter. By the time she was 6 months old, she was still waking at least every hour through the night and was only taking 30-minute naps. I was miserable and really feeling the effects of sleep deprivation. I knew that we needed help, not only for my own sanity, but for my daughter’s physical and mental health as well.
A friend suggested I try the Sleep Sense method, which offers a gentle approach to sleep training. I was skeptical that we would have success but to my amazement and delight, my daughter slept through the night for the first time in her life on our third night of sleep training. Our relationship flourished in the weeks and months to come. She was well rested, more energetic, and a much happier baby and I was enjoying motherhood again!
It changed our lives so dramatically that I wanted to share this gift with other parents struggling with their child’s sleep. When I learned that Sleep Sense offered a certification program to become a baby sleep consultant, I had no doubt that this was my calling.
That was 2 years ago. Since then I have given birth to a son, who I taught to be a champion sleeper from a young age. Over the past couple years I have worked with hundreds of families to teach their children healthy sleep habits. It’s an incredibly rewarding and fulfilling career!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting a small business with two young children certainly had its challenges. But since they are such great little sleepers, I am able to work around their sleep schedules. I feel incredibly lucky to have found a niche that allows me to pursue my passion of educating and bettering people’s lives.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Live Love Sleep – what should we know?
My specialty is helping parents develop a clear plan for solving their child’s sleep issues. I work with families to teach their children how to fall asleep independently so that they can get the sleep they need and deserve to be their very best. I create a customized sleep plan for each child I work with, which I review with parents in detail during our consultation. I believe my clients are so successful because of the detailed and personal follow up support that I provide over the next few weeks. I guide parents every step of the way and will not leave them until they have reached their sleep goals.
My approach is non-judgmental (yes, I have made all the mistakes too!) and supportive. Families in the DFW area love my in-home consultations because I am with them as they implement the plan on the first night, supporting them, and answering any questions as they come up. I have been through this myself and am devoted to helping others the same way I helped my own children because I know firsthand, the difference it makes in people’s lives.
Sleep is incredibly important for both children and parents. In fact, Dr. William Dement, the founder of Stanford University Sleep Research Center, suggest that sleep is the single most important factor in predicting how long people will live, even more influential than diet, exercise, or heredity. Infants and toddlers who are well rested are more energetic, happy, playful, and will be best equipped to cope with and learn from their environment.
To me, the reward in the results; the smiles of those happy babies and the relief in the eyes of the parents who are feeling reinvigorated and re-energized about raising kids now that they’re getting enough sleep.
I have a 100% success rate with parents who stick with their sleep plan and stay consistent. It is incredibly rewarding to help families give their child the gift to sleep peacefully. It is a gift that keeps on giving, and a skill that children will carry with them throughout their life!
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I am a sleep detective. I take a step back and look at the entire picture, because it’s not just what’s happening in the bedroom that could be causing the problem.
There are a variety of factors contribute to poor sleep such as a child’s sleep environment, daytime schedule, routine, diet, clothing worn to bed, or developmental milestones. It is my job to crack the code and uncover exactly what is causing a child’s sleep issue so that I can solve the problem once and for all.
