Today we’d like to introduce you to Kalon Jackson and Elliott “Lee” Cowart.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Kalon and Lee. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
The company started due to the lack of available roles for minorities and people of color. So, since we both work in Entertainment, we thought it would be easier for us to produce our own content and employ others that were just as talented but lacked the opportunity to be seen.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Venturing out to create your own business is never a smooth ride… but definitely a rewarding one! One of the hardest parts of being independent is capital. Getting funds to produce quality work can be costly due to all the moving parts that go into the filmmaking process. The saying is, “it takes a village!” And that village usually consist of other producers, talent, director and cinematographer, crew, lighting, grips, sound, script supervisor, an editor, marketing team, etc… this list can go on and on depending on the size of the project.
Blue Rose Films – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Blue Rose Films specialize in producing content such as films for distribution, commercials for local businesses and currently working on both scripted and unscripted series for TV. We’re known for our films such as And There Were 4 which is a black superhero film, our international documentary called BlaxploItalian which highlights the lack of diversity dating back 100 years in Italian-American cinema, as well as our film The Outlaw Johnny Black which is set in the same universe as the popular cult classic film Black Dynamite (both starring and directed by Micheal Jai White).
What sets us apart is our hands-on approach to each of the projects we decide to undertake by funding them out of our own pockets.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Seeing our first film Pain Love and Passion premiere at different festivals on the big screen with our company logo in the opening.
