Meet Kameisha Getum of Spa La La Dallas in Addison

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kameisha Getum.

Kameisha, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started out as a lash artist almost ten years ago. I was a college graduate and working in corporate America. But I would also do lashes every evening after work and on the weekends. I worked A LOT. My only day off was Sundays. I absolutely hated my 9-5 job. My husband was always very supportive and would encourage me to quit my job and pursue entrepreneurship. I finally gained the courage to do so in 2011.

I wasn’t satisfied with only doing lashes, so I decided to become an esthetician….which would enable me to provide more services. I enrolled into the Aveda Institute….earned my esthetics license in 2012. 2012 was also the year that Texas decided to regulate the service of eyelash extensions…..so I became licensed to do eyelash extensions, even though I’d been providing the service for several years already. In 2013, I decided to become “official,” created Spa La La Dallas…a small, full-service day spa!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It was not a smooth road, and to be honest, the road still gets bumpy.

Some of my main struggles were
-working and hustling alone
-Juggling ALL the many jobs that come with owning a business (you’re the owner, operator, manager, marketing rep, sales rep, receptionist, and the janitor lol)
-taking risks….some work out great, some don’t
-going down the entrepreneurial path without a mentor to guide me and warn me about those risks that don’t work out
-running a business and having a growing family at same time

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Spa La La Dallas story. Tell us more about the business.
My business is a small day spa. We offer various skincare services, waxing services, and semi-permanent individual eyelash extensions. If I had to state my “specialty,” it would be eyelash extensions. Only because I’ve been doing it the longest and became known for it.

Right now, what I am most proud of is how long I have survived being in this industry….how long I have been able to, not only stay in business but be PROFITABLE as well. And Spa La La Dallas has been able to exist for over five years now. Considering the statistics on how many businesses fail within the first five years…I am very proud to have reached that milestone.

What sets me apart from the others is what I call my servant heart. I own a business within the service industry. To succeed and actually enjoy working in this industry, you have to have a servant heart. I enjoy making my guests feel like they are truly being pampered and taken care of. Yes, it is important to show them the results that they seek when I provide a service. But it’s not enough for me to only do that. Let’s be honest; clients can go to many wonderful estheticians in this city. There are a lot of awesome lash artists out there as well. I show my guests that I actually care about them, the health of their skin/lashes, and their comfort while they are in my establishment. They can feel the difference. They know that it’s genuine. It also helps that my eyelash extensions last a lot longer than most. 😂 😉

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I don’t believe that luck has played a role in my business. I am blessed and fortunate in many ways, but not lucky.
