Today we’d like to introduce you to Kandace Anderson and Keisha Powell.
So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Kandace: Keisha and I got into a discussion about marriage in our community after watching a show called “Black Love.” The show spurred chats about our own marriages, the relationships we saw growing up and how much or little we know about the love stories of our loved ones. That discussion turned into an idea to film our friends and family. It took us a year to put it all together and we couldn’t be happier with it.
Keisha: Honestly, we are still on a high. The screening was weeks ago and I still get goosebumps thinking about it. I can’t believe we really did it. And I can’t wait to get started on the next one.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Keisha: It was pretty smooth for two people who have never done something like this. Our greatest challenge by far was that we decided to produce a film with zero experience in film making. We had so much to learn about everything from the type of equipment we need to how to edit. Fortunately, neither of us are afraid to get our hands dirty and we work together well.
Kandace: A happy challenge was having more footage than we could use. We got into some spirited conversations about what to include versus what won’t make the cut. Ultimately I think the finished product represents the best of the best.
Please tell us about Love in Color.
Keisha: Love in Color is all about telling love stories to and from our community. Our first event last December was a date night coupled with the screening of our first film and it was amazing. We are still sorting out what future of Love in Color will be. I mean this started as a passion project and a party. We definitely want to do it again and so does everyone that attended who continues to reach out to tell us how special it all was.
Kandace: Love in Color is a passion project. We simply want to see people like ourselves on screen talking about real stories of lasting love. We’ve been talking about what that means going forward. We’re thinking about a way to spur it into a nonprofit organization.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
Kandace: Love in Color exists because of the show “Black Love” on the Own network. We are so grateful that the Black Love team decided to embark on their journey so that we had the foundation to embark on ours.
Keisha: The interview couples deserve all the credit in the world. They really opened up to us. They were so flexible and gracious. If they’re reading this article, we love you!
