Today we’d like to introduce you to Kandy Cayne.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
As most girls, I entered and won my very first talent night way back when, and won. My drag career took off. Winning titles such as Miss Gay Monroe America, Miss Shreveport Apollo, Miss National Apollo, Miss Gay Dallas USofA, Miss Gay Top of Teas UofA, Miss Texas All American Goddess Emeritus, Miss Oklahoma USofA, Miss Oklahoma Continental, and who knows WHAT others!
I have lived in many different cities but have called Dallas my home for many years and I love it! I have so many wonderful friends and family here. I started my transition in 2003 ISH and have learned so much about myself along the way, I appeared on several TV shows Ricki Lake Maury Povich and two years ago, I was fortunate enough to be chosen for corrective surgery on Botched Season 4.
Currently, I am traveling with my amazing sisters Raquel Blake and Fantasha Suggs as part of the MY OH MY SHOW, an amazing drag show and I have a jewelry business along with my partner Benjamin called Butterfly and Bear Jewelry.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Life, in general, is challenging but if I had to choose one, it would be my visual impairment. I am legally blind and oftentimes, that gets to be a challenge. I make the most out of it, however, and we keep it moving!! If we happen to fall off the stage, honey, I just get back up, laugh it off, dust off and TRY AGAIN.
Please tell us about Butterfly and Bear Jewelry – what should we know?
I am a Mariah Carey impersonator as well as a couple of other illusions, every girl should have at least one illusion in their pocket just in case! I do private parties and corporate events and you can catch me doing Mariah at the My Oh My show. I also make drag jewelry for entertainers and celebs, it’s been three years and we’re growing and getting better and better. We love what we do and to make gorgeous pieces for people who love gorgeous pieces, what sets us apart is oftentimes, you can never get a hold of the person to get repairs or even get things you’ve paid for, however, with us, that’s never an issue. We adore our customers and want them to FEEL as special as they are.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
Lots of family and friends that believe in me as well as to offer constructive criticism to help make us better! My Mother has always been such a big supporter of mine and has always been there. She accepts me for exactly who I am.
