Today we’d like to introduce you to Karen Carrillo.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I am a proud Chicana and the middle child to immigrant parents who moved to the United States from Merida, Yucatan. We moved to Texas when I was about eight years old and didn’t have a lot as you can imagine so a lot of my time was either spent playing outdoors or using my imagination to draw, craft, etc. I loved taking apart old jewelry we would buy at garage sales and putting it back together to make something new for myself. The need to make things stuck with me and is very much a part of who I am and why I choose to create art.
Please tell us about your art.
I’m a graphic designer and illustrator so most of what I consider my art lives on the computer. I usually start out by doing a rough sketch and transfer that into vector graphics and illustrations that can be used in posters, t-shirts, stationary, etc. I’m often inspired by bright colors and pop culture quite a bit.
Choosing a creative or artistic path comes with many financial challenges. Any advice for those struggling to focus on their artwork due to financial concerns?
I believe that all artists deserve to be compensated for what they do because the reality is that many of them struggle to make living on their art alone. For me, it is always going to be a balancing act between creative pursuits and financial responsibilities. My best advice is to be resourceful and smart with what you have and find ways to make it work. If you love doing it, it is worth the effort and sacrifice that comes along with the work.
