Meet Karen Israel of Evolve Counseling and Wellness

Today we’d like to introduce you to Karen Israel.

Karen, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My foray into the world of psychotherapy started in childhood. I felt a true attraction and responsibility to my peers, family, and friends and their struggles. Detecting subtle non-verbal behavior from people, I would always offer my listening ear and help the way I knew- listening and encouraging. Compassion is a substantial component of my character and I am honored to give it to others. This opportunity brings me immense joy and meaning’ both in my professional and personal life.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Making a living from my calling has been a joy as well as a challenge. Being a feeling-centered person, business and marketing did not come naturally. However, in the vein of my work and the name of my practice; I have been pushed to EVOLVE and learn how to get my message to the masses. It is a skill I will never stop honing; which means, I will always seek to help others. This is thrilling to me because I know that my continued evolution will take my compassion and calling to places I cannot yet imagine!

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Evolve Counseling and Wellness – what should we know?
As an intern, from 1999 through 2001, I worked in an intensive outpatient treatment clinic for suicide prevention and grief recovery. I had the uncommon yet invaluable opportunity to work at least 20 hours per week with patients one-on-one and in groups. I learned about severe clinical depression, debilitating anxiety, and panic, physical/emotional/sexual trauma recovery, self-worth building, anger & rage management and so many other skills and schools of theory and practice that I still use to this day.

Since then, I have expanded my expertise to include assertiveness training; emotional eating and obesity recovery; psychological evaluation, counseling and assessment for pre and post bariatric patients; and divorce recovery & “rebirth”. I also gain such joy and commitment from self-esteem building and life-management for tweens, teens, and young adults. I use a variety of theoretical modalities, skills, and experiential techniques to amplify the counseling process.

I am ever-learning and ever-changing, and that is exciting! I’m also very proud to be a compassionate guide while encouraging my clients to take responsibility for their lives and bolster their courage to EVOLVE.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I believe that the desire to grow and change in my own life is the driving force behind longevity in the field of psychotherapy. I can only help when I have learned to help myself. I can only guide others to EVOLVE when I have had the experience of my own evolution.

Going through changes increases my courage and drive to see others reach their potential. I also know that helping others fulfills and replenishes me; it’s my inspiration and I am destined to seek it out!
