Today we’d like to introduce you to Karlos Lyons.
Karlos, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
After experiencing what I considered an existential identity crisis in 2015, I felt like I needed to really figure out my life’s purpose and to choose a career that would have a deeper meaning. That’s when I decided to go back to school to pursue a Master’s degree in counseling at Dallas Theological Seminary. After I graduated in Fall 2019, I began the work toward full licensure and I am currently working as a therapist at Lifeologie Counseling Oak Cliff.
As a therapist, I believe in the beauty of a sound mind and mental clarity, knowing the way we live successfully correlates with how we think and feel. I see the importance of the holistic approach to mental health and recognize the connection between the physical, spiritual, and mental aspects of the human experience. I truly want to see individuals balance and succeed in each area for optimum wellness, and core to the best of my belief is when we change our brains, we can change our lives.
I integrate various counseling modalities in serving my clients: Person-Centered Therapy, Existential Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy, and faith-based integrations. My desire to cultivate varying counseling methods comes from my integrated psychotherapy education at Dallas Theological Seminary (DTS). During my time at DTS, I became intrigued by the multiplicity of ways to help an individual discover wholeness and purpose. I seek to use every tool at my disposal to aid in that discovery.
I was born and raised in Tennessee, moved to Mississippi as a pre-teen, and finally moved west, with my lovely wife, to Texas in 2016. I consider myself a “Tenne-Missi-Texan” and consider each state instrumental in my formation, identity, and affinity for my deep Southern roots.
In light of the systemic racism and oppression of people of color in America, I see the increasing need for mental health advocacy in Black and Brown communities. Racial trauma, health disparities, and lack of access are common roadblocks for many communities of color. I seek to champion mental health advocacy as one tool in the fight against oppression.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
When you are moving towards your purpose, the journey is not always easy or smooth. Whether it is the crippling fear of failure, saving enough money to get through school, or trying to balance working and being in school full time, the struggles were there, but I’ve enjoyed the journey. I love the work that I get to do now.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
I work as a therapist at Lifeologie Oak Cliff. Lifeologie Counseling Oak Cliff is a collaborative community of creative therapists. We bring our “what box?” approach and relentless commitment to collaboration to our work with adults, teens, children, elders, couples, and families.
We offer individual professional counseling services for adults, children, and teens. In addition, we provide marriage counseling, family counseling, and group counseling.
Lifeologie is also LGBTQ+ friendly. I do not own Lifeologie Oak Cliff, but I am a part of the counseling team. I specialize in couples therapy, men’s issues, BIPOC issues, behavioral therapy, and addictions.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I define success as following your passion. It’s the ability to wake up every day and do work that you love without regret, help change people’s lives, and to make an honest living in the process. It’s that simple for me.
