Meet Kassandra Rodriguez of 1st House Branding

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kassandra Rodriguez.

Hi Kassandra , thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I grew up in San Luis, Arizona, a small border town where I never really saw “brand strategist” as a career option. I actually discovered branding almost by accident.

I started my career as a marketing intern for a company in Arizona and was offered a full-time position after graduating. My boss gave me a lot of freedom to figure out what area of marketing I wanted to pursue. At the time, I remember telling him that I wanted to make sure the company looked and sounded consistent everywhere—from our website and marketing materials to events and customer communications. He said, “Oh, so you want to do branding?”

That one conversation completely changed the trajectory of my career.

I started reading everything I could about branding and eventually discovered brand strategy. I became fascinated by the fact that a brand was so much bigger than a logo or marketing campaign. It was the company’s positioning, messaging, culture, customer experience and employee experience all working together.

Working in-house for almost four years gave me an education I still rely on today. I saw how businesses actually make decisions, how departments work together, how employee morale can affect the customer experience, and how even a great marketing idea has to make sense within the realities of the business.

Eventually, I knew I needed exposure to more industries and more complex brand challenges if I wanted to grow as a strategist. I had also dreamed about living in New York City for years, so in 2021, I took the leap and moved from Arizona to New York.

I joined the brand strategy team at a global marketing agency, and that experience completely expanded my understanding of the discipline. Suddenly, I was surrounded by specialized teams in research, strategy, design, copywriting, social and performance. I learned how to build brands with rigorous research, structured processes and incredible creative resources behind them.

But it also made something very clear to me: that level of brand strategy was often only accessible to companies with very large budgets.

I kept thinking about the kinds of businesses I had worked with earlier in my career—the small but mighty organizations that were established enough to invest in their growth, but would probably never hire a major agency to build their brand strategy. I knew how transformational this work could be for them, and I wanted to find a way to make it more accessible.

That idea eventually became 1st House Branding.

When I left agency life, I initially thought I would return to freelancing. My partner encouraged me to think bigger and actually build the business I had been imagining. So in 2024, I formed 1st House Branding and committed to it.

I booked my first major client within the first two months, and that client relationship continues today. What began as brand strategy eventually grew into me serving as their Fractional Brand Director, helping bring the brand to life across marketing, sales, customer experience, employee experience, events and creative direction. Along the way, I’ve also worked with founder-led businesses and solopreneurs who are exceptional at their craft but need help turning what they’ve built into a clear, compelling brand.

Today, my work sits somewhere between strategist, advisor and extension of the internal team. I help businesses uncover what makes them worth choosing, clarify how they communicate that value, and align the people and experiences behind the brand.

The name 1st House comes from astrology. The First House represents identity and how you show up in the world, which felt like the perfect metaphor for the way I approach branding. I don’t believe great brands are invented. I believe they’re uncovered, aligned and communicated.

When I look at where I am today, there’s a full-circle element to it. I started inside a growing business trying to figure out how to make the company look, sound and feel more cohesive. I moved across the country to learn how some of the largest organizations approached those same challenges. Now I get to bring those two perspectives together and make that level of strategic thinking accessible to the businesses I originally wanted to help.

I’m still building 1st House, and I think I always will be. But the purpose behind it has remained very clear: helping businesses fully embody their brand so it’s lived, not just spoken.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I would actually say it has been a relatively smooth road. I’m a strategist, after all—I tend to move slowly, think things through and have a plan. I’ve never felt the need to grow for the sake of growing or rush into the next stage. Slow and steady wins the race.

Of course, I’ve refined my services, adjusted my positioning and learned a lot about the kind of business I want to build along the way, but I see those as part of the process rather than setbacks.

The hardest part has been learning to believe in myself and becoming my own best brand ambassador. It’s easy for me to sit across from a client, recognize what makes their business special and tell them, “You need to be talking about this.” Doing that for yourself can be much harder.

Entrepreneurship has forced me to take my own advice. If I’m asking my clients to confidently communicate their value and what makes them worth choosing, I have to be willing to do the same for myself and 1st House Branding.

As you know, we’re big fans of 1st House Branding. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
1st House Branding is a brand strategy and advisory studio built around a simple belief: great brands aren’t invented—they’re uncovered, aligned and communicated.

I help businesses fully embody their brand so it’s lived, not just spoken. That starts by looking beyond the logo, colors or social media and getting to the foundation of the business: What makes you different? Why should someone choose you? Who are you trying to attract? What do your employees believe about the company? And does the experience you’re creating actually match what you’re promising?

My work brings together brand strategy, messaging, Customer Experience (CX) and Employee Experience (EX). I look at the business from the inside out because I believe some of the strongest differentiators are often already there—they just haven’t been identified or communicated effectively.

I primarily work with two types of clients. For established organizations, I offer Brand Foundations, where I evaluate the business, conduct research and internal interviews, align leadership, and develop the positioning, value propositions, brand story and messaging that give the organization a shared direction. I can then stay involved as a Fractional Brand Director, helping translate that strategy across marketing, sales, CX, EX, campaigns, events and creative direction.

I also work with solopreneurs and founder-led businesses through Build Your Brand. These are often people who are incredibly talented at what they do but are too close to their own business to clearly articulate what makes them different. I help them turn all of those ideas into a clear brand strategy and messaging they can actually use.

What I think sets 1st House apart is that I don’t come in and tell a business who it should become. I work collaboratively with the people who know the business best to uncover what is already worth choosing and build from there. I also understand the realities of implementation, so the strategy isn’t meant to sit in a beautiful deck—it needs to be useful to the people making decisions every day.

The name 1st House comes from astrology. The First House represents identity and how you show up in the world, which perfectly reflects my philosophy on branding: know who you are first, then be intentional about how you show up.

What I’m most proud of is that the brand I’m building reflects the same advice I give my clients. I want 1st House to be thoughtful, collaborative and deeply strategic, but also accessible. Great brand strategy shouldn’t be reserved for companies with massive agency budgets.

Ultimately, I want 1st House Branding to be known for helping businesses make the transition from simply running a business to building a brand people understand, trust and want to be part of.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
I love this question because we don’t normally get asked about our childhood in professional interviews, but I think mine would tell you a lot about who I am today.

I was very creative and expressive growing up. I loved dance, fashion, writing, design—anything that gave me an opportunity to create or communicate an idea. But I also naturally gravitated toward leadership. Whenever there was an opportunity to take responsibility for something, I usually raised my hand.

In high school, I was president of my yearbook class and student director of our dance department, all while teaching dance and cheer after school. Looking back, I was learning so many of the skills I use today without realizing it. I was figuring out how to motivate a team, organize people with different personalities, plan events, communicate a vision and then actually execute it.

Yearbook especially feels funny to look back on now because we were essentially building a brand and telling a story. We had to decide what the theme was, how it would look and feel, what stories deserved to be told and how all of those individual pieces could come together into something cohesive. I just didn’t have the language for it yet.

Dance taught me something different. Being a leader in a creative environment taught me that having a vision isn’t enough—you have to be able to communicate it in a way that gets other people excited about bringing it to life. You also learn very quickly that different people need different kinds of motivation and leadership.

I think a lot of who I am professionally was already showing up back then: creative, ambitious, organized, curious and probably always trying to turn an idea into something tangible.

I didn’t know I would become a brand strategist or entrepreneur, but in hindsight, I had been practicing pieces of both for a very long time.
