Today we’d like to introduce you to Kate Thomason.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Kate. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
It all began in 7th grade when I had decided to try out the journalism elective at my school. Immediately after getting to play around with a camera, I decided I loved spending my time with my eye behind the lense. As I began to show family and friends some of the images I had captured, many people told me I had a real eye for photography and that I should consider doing something with it. I went to a small private school, so the images I would capture were more life-based pictures of scenery or my family on vacations.
As time went on, I moved to Highland Park High School to start my 9th-grade year. I was encouraged by many to try out the yearbook elective, which is a very well known and prestigious program at Highland Park. After I got my feet wet with highschool and started to gain more confidence with the camera, I had decided what I really loved all aspects of photography, especially sports photography. Spring of freshman year my mom and dad really pushed me to create a business doing what I love, and that is where KLT Photography comes into the story. After I had established a name and a service, I dedicated so much time and effort into it and I LOVED it. I do anything from photographing non-profits, to taking family Christmas cards, to capturing images for businesses, to spending every Friday night under the lights capturing football pictures. It brings me so much joy and I could not imagine my life without it.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
By accepting the position as a photographer, I have also accepted many of the challenges a photographer faces. Although I love spending football games on the fields, getting a glimpse of what the game-day experience might be like, one of the things that is not ideal is the turnaround time. In the yearbook, I have learned that a deadline is a deadline, and a picture is needed when the picture is needed and there are no exceptions. With that being said, as exhausted as I was after standing up for 3 hours on the field, I could not let that stop my task from being complete. I would stay up after every football game until approximately 2 or 3 am. I had to make myself upload and edit the majority of my work because the quicker the pictures are returned, the better. Learning the importance of a deadline was definitely a challenge and came along with consequences, but my work ethic has forever changed due to that important proponent in media production. All in all, learning to push through and break new barriers has helped mold me into the person I am today.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
I specialize in sports photography, and I also specialize in family portraits. I love people and getting the opportunity to interact with them as much as I can. I especially love getting to connect with athletes after seeing the joy on their faces after showing them a picture that I caught of them scoring the winning touchdown, completing the catch, or finishing the last leg of a race.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Having the ability to shoot pictures for such a winning and tradition-based Highschool has provided me with such great images that I know I could not get anywhere else. From football to lacrosse, to gymnastics, to track, they are all very determined and well-produced sports that provide me a benefit behind the lens.
