Today we’d like to introduce you to Kathryn and David Seay.
Kathryn and David, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
In 1996, begrudgingly we both accepted a blind date. That’s when everything changed, for the best.
Being quite content and settled in our own lives, neither of us were particularly interested in the idea of a blind date. Our mutual friend however, was. Knowing she was unlikely to give up, we relented and both said yes. We went out with several other couples (safety in numbers) but it was only a matter of minutes before we wished they would all go home. We’ve not been apart since.
At the time, Kathryn was a drama teacher and theater director and Dave was a free-lance video producer. It didn’t take long to realize that our skill sets were complimentary, so Kathryn gave up her day job and joined forces in producing videos.
During the last 20+ years we’ve worked together on TV shows, documentaries, corporate videos, marketing videos, fundraising videos and more – in and around Dallas as well as across the country. We’ve worked with several of our clients for many years, and we’re happy to say many have become close friends. We feel incredibly lucky and are extremely grateful, and can’t imagine working and living any other way.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
We’ve certainly had our share of ups and down in getting where we are. Producing videos is great when times are good. However, when the financial climate gets dicey, marketing departments are quick to cut video production as a cost-saving measure.
Having endured 3 economic downturns, we’ve learned how to insulate ourselves somewhat and now plan for both contingencies. We call it our “oh sh##” fund.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the David Seay Productions story. Tell us more about the business.
We are a turn-key video production company and primarily work with businesses to help them achieve their long-term marketing goals.
Being a two-person company, we are very much a “hands-on” operation. We write, we shoot, we edit. The projects we create have depth and nuance because we know it’s not just good producing, or good shooting, or good editing that makes a good video. It’s a million little things done right, and knowing those million little things only comes with time and experience.
If we had to say our biggest strength, it would be our ability to connect. We connect personally with our colleagues, with our suppliers, and with our clients. We aren’t just doing the job for the money, though of course we have to pay the bills just like everybody else. For us it is all about the people we work with and their needs. We really do care about them, and as a result we’re fortunate to have wonderful relationships that have led to a great diversity of projects.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Our proudest moment – and most grateful moment – isn’t really a moment at all. It’s the everyday realization that our company has been successful for 20 + years, and that we still love what we do, and each other!
