Meet Kathy Pon of Met Salon Co in Plano

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kathy Pon.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Kathy. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
In 2014, I began my hairstyling journey with courses at Paul Mitchell of Dallas while balancing a full-time position in a typical corporate setting. As long as I can remember, I have wanted to pursue a career in the beauty industry due to my fascination with fashion world, however, I was hesitant to chase any opportunities because I was stuck with the mindset that working a corporate gig was the only road to success. And to be quite honest, I was fearful of failure of entering a tough industry, judged largely on outcomes of a visual product, which would completely squash my confidence if my skills were not up to par.

There came a moment during my previously monotonous career, where my mother advised me take the risk and leave an unfulfilling and lackluster job to do exactly what I want for the rest of my life. With the takeaways from that conversation and after much deliberation, I decided to enroll into Paul Mitchell and challenging myself to balance coursework and a full-time position. There were definitely periods during this time where I seriously reconsidered my choices with the thought of turning back lulling in my mind, but I willed my way through. I was eventually able graduate and land an apprenticeship on weekends to hone my skills, fueling my desire to improve to become the best, and justifying to myself the career path I chose.

From there, I have worked at Cutting Edge Hair for 2 years, Gold Glam Bar for 2 years, and have most recently begun my next chapter with MET Salon Co. Each step of the way, I have been able to further develop and bolster my skillset, and am eagerly anticipating what the future holds for my career.

Has it been a smooth road?
Definitely not. As with most new career choices, there were struggles along the way I faced that are not unheard of. The typical corporate setting provides safeguards such as a set schedule, vacation time, and benefits. With my career choice, those are not a guarantee: There are 12-14 hour days, potentially with no lunch, 6 days out of the week. Benefits, such as health insurance, is not a provision that all salons can offer. And building a healthy clientele base requires continually marketing myself and my skills in a portfolio type fashion to garner interest and bolster my book of business.

To top it off, I am not satisfied with being mediocre or average. I have a drive to continually better myself and break through plateaus and ceilings so that I can provide the best experience for clients I serve.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the MET Salon Co story. Tell us more about the business.
