Today we’d like to introduce you to Katie Allen.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’ve been passionate about photography for as long as I can remember, but it wasn’t until I graduated college that I began experimenting with videography. I studied Media Production at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi and I fell in love with being able to bring pictures to life. Once I moved back home to Dallas, I started doing freelance videography projects and now I’m turning my love for videography into a business.
Has it been a smooth road?
The biggest struggle I’ve found since I’ve been doing freelance projects is being able to find what type of videography I want to specialize in. When I started doing this a couple of years ago, I would take any project I could get (weddings, events, website promotions, etc.). It got to a point where I was doing projects I wasn’t interested in and it made me dread working. I learned that I had to decide what I was personally interested in, what I like to film, and then refocus my energy into finding projects that fit that.
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
At the beginning of the year, I officially rebranded to specializing in live music videography. I work with local artists and musicians to help share their music with others. Essentially, my brand is helping artists grow their brand.
My goal with every project is to translate the artist’s performance into a shareable format. I want to be able to capture the artist’s vibe and energy in my videos so everyone watching gets the idea of who the artist is and what their work is like. I understand the importance of getting exposure, especially as an up and coming artist, and I want to make my content and their’s as realistic and as true to the performance and the artist as I can.
In the future, I plan to dive into more of a documentary-style approach with my projects and add more behind-the-scenes elements for bands and artists to share a more personal view of what it is like for them in the industry.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I expect to see the freelance industry grow immensely in the future. Social media helps a lot with that; it has become such a great tool for artists to be able to get content out into the world and I see myself being in the middle of that. The work I do allows me to assist them in generating more content, which they’re able to post more regularly, and in turn grow their own brands, as well as mine.
