Meet Katie Carrillo of kpc creative

Today we’d like to introduce you to Katie Carrillo.

Katie, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I have 17 years of marketing and advertising experience, 15 in full-service agency and going on 3 owning my own. With education in Organizational Leadership and International Marketing Management, it was an easy decision to create an agency I loved in an industry that captivated me. kpc creative was born post-Covid when small businesses were just finding their footing again. My past clientele was big pharma, the beauty industry, and life-sciences, regional health and human services agencies, national paint recycling, higher education campuses, and DoD. I found beauty in grassroots with kpc creative with the understanding that the movers and shakers, the ones in next generations that were to move the mountains, needed direction, support, and marketing to get their business owning a good share of their market with a strategic brand plan. Enter my creative operations and marketing abilities – I’ve assisted some amazing business launches from real estate to AI security, B2B Custom Confectionary to landscaping mobile app assist, and faith-based apparel to name a few.. the breakout generation from corporate to ownership is large and we’re here for it. Additionally I am a mom to 4, 6, and 8 year old (with 2 bonus fur-babies), a wife to a commercial pilot, owner of a Kids Gym franchise, and lover of learning and adventures and still play soccer and participate in rowing!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It is never going to be a smooth road when taking a path less traveled. My challenges in both corporate and ownership can be summed up in three bullets:
– Executive leadership while young in age, yet experienced and knowledgable, can be a difficult dynamic. There was a shift when going from manager, to officer of the business especially for the older patrons. It became lonely at the top. It was a story of trust and culture positivity that was a beautiful thing, but it certainly expedited interpersonal relationships to a NEW new.
– Distrust or perhaps disdain for females in power. There was a time I moved agencies to be closer to family. Unfortunately the lay of the land in this particular industry was not the same I grew up in professionally, and my spoken word, thoughts, expertise, and strategy rooted in integral expertise, had boundaries and were silenced regardless of what I brought to the table. The misalignment here knocked me back and drained my momentum for nearly 2 years.
– ADHD has been my superpower growing up and into the business world. Multitasking and strength in compartmentalization of tasks is otherworldly. However, when building businesses where I am the one driving expectations, I found it incredibly hard to keep the same pace. Having a brand-objective of someone elses and a culture to abide by had always kept me in swing nicely.. promptly and highly organized. When creating my own it was overwhelming at times as I was not tied to anyone else’s expectations but my own – how freeing and so very intimidating at the same time for a mind like mine.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Genuine integrity, agility to economic as well as organizational shifts, and a well-kept foundational rally cry – a North Star. A company with these qualities and a leadership team that shares them equally, personally, will be well prepared for anything that ruffles feathers within client markets, interdepartmentally and operationally.
