Meet Katie Mayeux

Today we’d like to introduce you to Katie Mayeux.

Katie, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was born and raised in Baton Rouge, LA and moved to the DFW Metroplex with my family in 2007. I’m an only child and my dad is a Marine who retired from the Baton Rouge PD. My parents raised me to ask questions, follow my heart and fiercely protect those who could not protect themselves. I’ve been married for 20 years and have an 18-year-old daughter and 13-year-old son. I was a stay at home mom for 11 years. I struggled to find my place after staying home for so long but was blessed to find some amazing women and friends with the local YMCA. I gained confidence in working out and became certified to teach group exercise. I found strength in helping people and my community. In my years at the YMCA, I was lucky to help people from all walks of life. Honestly, I think they helped me more. I worked with single parents, cancer survivors, and grandparents that were forced to suspend their retirement to raise their grandchildren. I worked in drowning prevention and so many other amazing programs.

A couple of years ago, I knew it was time to make a change but I also knew I wanted to continue to help people and my community, so I started selling real estate. I love helping people find their dream home. Protecting my clients is my number one priority. I feel truly blessed to have found my passion and I have not looked back.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I don’t think anyone could say they have had a smooth road, the lessons are in the struggle. There is always going to be someone who “appears” stronger, smarter, prettier but they will never be you or have that special thing that makes you you. I can choose to focus on the struggle or I can choose to be different. Like many women, I made my kids, husband, work, and everyday life a priority over my own health and well being. I shut myself off from friends and family and I believed the people in my life when they told me I wouldn’t succeed. Then, I got angry, I made myself a priority and I started fighting back at the ones who told me I would fail. I surrounded myself with a tribe of amazing women who understood my struggles with parenting, owning a business, self-esteem and just everyday living. If I could give one piece of advice it’s surrounding yourself with like-minded, loving, strong-willed women who won’t just tell you what you want to hear but what you need to hear.

What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of? What sets you apart from others?
I’m a real estate agent with eXp Realty, I specialize in helping people buy and sell homes. Sometimes, I think I was crazy to get into this business, let’s face it, everyone knows an agent or is related to one. Real estate is not just transactional to me its a part of me. I understand people save for years to buy a home it’s personal and I don’t take that trust for granted.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
What are my future plans, I have dreams of traveling, watching my kids grow into productive adults, growing old with my husband but most importantly not losing myself again. Making time to feed my soul, reminding others to stop and breath and encouraging beautiful friends in my life that it’s ok to ask for help.
