Today we’d like to introduce you to Katie Rogers.
Hi Katie, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
Hey guys! My name is Katie Rogers and I started out as a cocktail waitress and paid my way through cosmetology school in Dallas. Became class president (felt smart instead of “pretty”) for the first time in my life. Fell in love with all things hair and beauty – especially extensions. When I graduated, I focused more on hair extensions and how to make them thicker than I created my own style and brand called mermaid’s hair. Which is handmade strands to match the client’s hair perfectly and twice as thick as everyone else’s in the industry. We still hand-make the hair to this day and have people travel all over to come sea us at The Mermaid SEAlon. Oh yeah, I forgot to mention I own a salon, Haha! It’s in the heart of Dallas, two-story, one-stop glam shop – we have services from hair to nails, spray tans, and everything else in between! We also have so many “instaworthy” spots for shell-fies and of course, can’t forget our cotton candy champagne! Freshly made for each guest and comes with a sequin mermaid tail that they can keep as a SEA-venir 😉 🧜♀️
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The seas were choppy sometimes not gonna lie Haha!! I’ve had a manager steal so much money from me because I trusted too much and didn’t check paperwork and stuff the first year I opened the SEAlon. But I quickly learned that lesson and I’m glad it happened because it was a wake-up call. I can’t just be the bubbly hairstylist that greets you when you walk in – I need to be a BUSINESS woman as well and check reports every day etc. This is my BRAND, my baby. My everything. And now that I think like a boss, I’m respected even more by my employees and let’s just say, the seas are a lot smoother nowadays. Haha
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I invented the double-strand extensions 10 years ago – and named it “Mermaid Hair”
I have grown a following on Instagram @mermaidhairxo and have inspired a lot of hairstylists to specialize in extensions.
I’ve taught over 250 “Mermaid Makers” across the nation to grow the brand.
My brand and salon are the perfect balance of quality, mermaid fantasy, and class. Sprinkled with fun! We’re high-end but not stuck up and I think that’s really important to do great work on the clients and also give them an unforgettable experience! The Mermaid SEAlon has become a tourist guide for sure. I’ve also opened up a boutique this year “The Dallifornia Boutique” because I was born in California and raised in Dallas! It’s a blend of Calli cool streetwear and Dallas cowgirl Haha! You have to come check it out – 1409 Botham jean Blvd. @TheDalliforniaBoutiqueXo
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
I think relatability. Most of my followers have been following me since Myspace days hahaha so they’ve seen me grow from famous cocktail waitress and Dallas “celebrity” to working my ass off, creating a brand, and not being afraid to just GO FOR IT!!! People ask who my role model is and honestly, it’s myself. Haha, there’s a snoop dogg quote that says “I’d like to thank ME for being me” and that just resonates so much. Lol not in a cocky way but in an honest way. I don’t look up to really anyone else. I just stay in my lane and proud of every accomplishment I’ve achieved so far and can’t wait to see what 2022 brings 🙂
