Today we’d like to introduce you to Katy Stelter.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
At the ripe old age of 30, I decided that my career needed an overhaul because my position as an Executive Assistant was no longer fulfilling. The Beauty Industry has intrigued me for as long as I can remember.
In Oprah’s words, I had an “ah-hah moment” when a commercial for Ogle School of Beauty aired on tv. This was it! I scheduled a tour of the school the next morning and signed up to start class the following week. I lucked out with an amazing group of students and top-of-the-line instructors that were an endless source of inspiration. I was encouraged by school leadership members to enter the Beacon competition which is an industry-leading program run by the Professional Beauty Association.
Entering required submission of a professional resume, a portfolio, letters of recommendation, and a marketing piece. More on that in a moment. Upon graduation and state board exams, I immediately began working on my license for cosmetic lasers and other medical-grade procedures at the National Laser Institute in Dallas. For me, this was a very natural next step as I tend to be very methodical and technical. I continued to fall in love with the aesthetic world and with the education now behind me, I was able to focus on how I wanted my new career to look.
About that time, I received notification that my competition submission had been chosen as a nationwide top 100 winner. Winners received airfare, hotel accommodations, and access to PBA Beauty Week (North America’s largest beauty event) in Las Vegas. Industry icons spoke to the group, providing us with the tools and guidance to begin a successful career. I started my business plan on the plane ride back to Texas and the rest is history…
