Today we’d like to introduce you to Kayla Crawford.
Kayla, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I have wanted to own my own business since I was 12 years old. As with any young adult, I tried a few different things but I realized out of all those things, I seemed to be passionate about daily interaction with people. I have the type of personality that people will feel that I have known them for years.
One night, while laying in bed, God gave me a vision. In this vision, I was behind a checkout counter in a store. In this store, people were turning in their burdens in exchange for Jesus Christ. I was so confused with this vision at that particular time in my life and even went as far as to question God about where he was trying to lead me, but over time, God started to give daily confirmation as to what my role in all of this was. God wanted me to be fishers of men and Rose Gold South was going to be the mode of transportation to accomplish this goal. In Sept. 2018, Rose Gold South was born.
Rose Gold South is a boutique in Duncanville, TX. We offer a variety of affordable fashion apparel, accessories, and footwear. We also offer makeup services, eyelash extensions, and therapeutic yoni steams. Rose Gold South represents the beautiful and courageous women that are not afraid to be their own hype and live boldly, be themselves and make a difference!
Has it been a smooth road?
Of course not. There were bumps and bruises along the way. This is actually my second time around trying to execute the same dream lol. The first time I tried to open a store it was a complete flop. I went into business with my sister in law and we couldn’t see eye to eye on anything. So, what started out as a partnership ended up being a solo ship. After losing my business partner, I lost focus and had to let that particular store go. I couldn’t understand it then but that failure taught me how to do it right this time. I also can say that God gave me double for my trouble. I love my sister in law but we were horrible as business partners lol. My first store was only 500 sq ft and this store is 1200 sq ft. I have two employees versus at my first store, I couldn’t afford to hire even one. I am also in an actual storefront facing the street versus with the first boutique you couldn’t see my store if you were on the street, lol. I can say that I learned a lot. I am not embarrassed because it didn’t work out the first time, I use that as a teaching moment for myself and when I talk to other inspiring entrepreneurs and they can relate to that.
With my current store, I have had a few stumbles, from me not passing my fire inspection the first TWO times to receive my certificate of occupancy to me not seeing the growth in my business that I projected to see in the beginning phases. It has been a hard road but I have remained faithful and determined. I believe that in life, there will be trials and tribulations but if God gave you a vision then you have to keep that in the forefront. Sometimes, family and friends won’t support you, you may have a week where a business is booming and the next week you don’t sell a thing but that’s ok. Nothing in life is easy. I often reflect on the before and after picture of my boutique and suddenly the working two jobs to fund the dream, the long hours, the no’s, the hurdles, none of it matters. That picture means a lot to me because it shows me my progress, determination, and hope. I also look at the ones who did it before me and I remain inspired by them and their stories of triumph but most importantly I constantly replay the words God spoke to me and that makes me grind even harder. Don’t ever give up!
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Rose Gold South story. Tell us more about the business.
Rose Gold South is a full-service women’s boutique. We offer makeup services, specializing in eyelash extensions, provide therapeutic yoni steams as well as offer women’s retail. As the owner of Rose Gold South, I am most proud of how fast my business is growing and the customer service that is being provided to every customer that steps foot in my Duncanville location. I have had the opportunity to network with some amazing people as well as create meaningful relationships with all of my clients and that means a lot to me. I look back over my journey and I remember staying up late nights trying to make this dream come true and to see this coming to life is amazing. It just shows me that God is still good, you just have to do your part.
I would like to say that our customer service at Rose Gold South sets us apart from everyone else. We offer a very open and friendly atmosphere. Clients are like family to us and it is my goal to make everyone feel welcomed. I have been in so many salons or boutiques and remember just being disgusted at how we as clients were treated as if our money was welcomed but we as people were not. When I was sitting down writing my business plan, one of my goals was to make sure that all of my clients knew that their business was appreciated. I think We truly earn your business at Rose Gold.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
The beauty industry has reached an all-time high and I am excited to see where it is headed. Trends are forever changing so you have to stay up with the time. I believe that eyelash extensions are taking over the game though! I mean, ladies are wearing 25mm eyelashes, do you know how long that is, lol. I just pray that this opportunity that God has created for me survives me, the opportunist, and I can create generational wealth for my children and grandchildren within the beauty industry.
