Today we’d like to introduce you to Kayla Dye.
Kayla, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My story in Social Media Consulting began in 2013 when I was a year fresh out of college and clueless. Circle 5 years later & here I am the owner of my very own business.
I started working as a front desk receptionist at a startup cosmetic dermatology office in Plano and they needed some help getting the word out about their new location. As a millennial, naturally I suggested creating some buzz on social media and quickly turned my receptionist role into a marketing role as I explored with trial and error with their new social media presence.
After some time, I decided to take a bigger risk and join a local skincare company as their Social Media Content Manager. I learned a lot through working with a large business and had a lot of resources at my disposal for growing and learning in my field.
After 2 years of working the 9-5, I found fitness instructing as a passion and decided to put my newfound social media expertise to good use in a small, locally owned fitness studio. I built up my own social media following as I trained as a cycling instructor with Lync Cycling in Plano & Dallas and pitched the idea to the studio owner to help with their marketing & social media. She took a risk and believed in me building her business and so I quit my 9-5 job and instruct fitness full-time alongside social media consulting & marketing for Lync Cycling as well as many small businesses in the Dallas area.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Getting to where you want to go is never smooth but you weigh your pros and cons and decide what is worth fighting for. There are always ups & downs, especially with working for yourself. The benefits of 9-5 do not go un-noticed, such as a guaranteed paycheck & health benefits but owning my own business and creating my life as I want to see it every day has been gratifying.
When I first left my cushy desk job to pursue fitness and social media consulting on my own, I took a significant pay cut while I worked to build my clientele. I cancelled my cable (bye TV binging), moved from uptown to the burbs, traded in some of my luxuries for more affordable accommodations and sold a ton of my belongings online to make some extra cash. Money was tight but I was happy.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about KD MKTG – what should we know?
KD MKTG is a local marketing company & I specialize in social media consulting & design work. However, my work ranges from social media ads to website design to email campaigns to creative photoshoots. I love the idea of creating something from nothing which is why I only take on small businesses, usually locally owned so that I can help my community grow. I know what it’s like to watch something that you created prosper and it’s the best feeling. I’m most proud of the risk I took leaving a well-paying job from a reputable company and walking right into the unknown. It was the scariest thing I ever did but I’m proud that I followed my passion. I think what sets me apart is that I’m in it too. I know what it’s like to create something from the ground up and watch it grow, I know what it takes for it to succeed.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
When I was young, my mother used to answer all of my worries and woes with one question. At the time, I was super annoyed because I just wanted answers but looking back, it was the only answer I needed. Any time I would ask her advice, she would say to me, “Kayla, what would you do if you had no fear?” I live that motto every single day and take every risk that comes my way because if I had no fear, I would do it all.
