Today we’d like to introduce you to Kayla Scales.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Kayla. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Igimèjí technically started in late 2016, when a relationship between Ladi and I started to flourish. When we moved to Kathmandu in 2017, we started playing our music inside bars and restaurants. We decided from that experience that we really wanted to take our music more seriously. When we came back to DFW, we got even more gigs and opportunities. We found a drummer, Jelen. And we’ve also recently added a bass player.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Has anything worth doing even been smooth sailing?! I think the biggest challenge was the one that pushed us to take our music more seriously. While we were in Kathmandu, Ladi was arrested and had to stay in a Nepali jail for a month. After Ladi was arrested, we immediately lost both of our jobs (getting arrested in Nepal is kind of a big deal). Eventually, Ladi was released on bail but we couldn’t leave Nepal just yet, so we started playing shows at this place called Booze Belly to make ends meet. Overall, things turned out alright.
Can you give our readers some background on your music?
We make noise! Glorious, glorious noise! It’s kind of hard to pin down our genre because we’re kind of all over the place music-wise. But I would say we’re a fusion band, we play RnB, hip hop, pop, and rock and that’s what set us apart from other bands. We sound a bit like The Internet, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Ari Lennox, and J Cole. We’re I think we’re most proud of our original music and the art that we’ve made since we’ve started the band.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
When my mother took me to Disney World, twice.
