Meet Kayla Turner of Immersekbeauty

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kayla Turner

Hi Kayla , it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Since middle school I’ve always enjoyed doing hair and started to get good at it, so other people saw how I did my own and wanted me to do theirs also. I realized I could get paid for my talent and started to make income throughout my teenage years. I played basketball in high school so I could not pursue my hair career by attending cosmetology school during high school and play sports at the same time . I worked hard enough to receive a basketball scholarship and attend college, so doing hair was put on the back burner until I needed extra money. I focused on becoming better at basketball instead and allowed it to carry me through the rest of my college journey. I did not come from a family of money and my basketball talent and hair styling skills was my only hope for me to make it out of poverty. Most times I did not have money to eat out or even pay my phone bill, but I eventually fell back into my hustle mentality. I understood instantly I had the option to change my circumstance and I chose to do hair when I had the opportunity to earn money and had to make it stretch to get through college. I received my associates degree and a few years later my bachelors degree in Mass Communications. I was excited about my accomplishments and very stressed about getting a job to officially start making reliable income. After volunteering and completing my internship to build my experience I applied to countless jobs and officially landed my first Media job at KETK news station as a multimedia journalist. I stayed there for about a year until I realized I needed more income, and working for a salary to just break even or barely make ends meet wasn’t good enough for me. I was still doing hair on the side to bring in extra income, but decided to move back to the Dallas where I know there were better job opportunities. I worked a total of two full time jobs for a max of two years until I understood going hard for others was not for me. I understood my capabilities could take me farther and bring less stress and more happiness, so I started my hair business Immersekbeauty before the last year of working my second corporate job. I was extremely stressed and filled with anxiety daily and it was during the time Covid-19’s quarantine, so a lot of time was available for me to make my move to a better life. I started to focus on my hair business and told my self faithfully I wouldn’t be working for someone else for too much longer and sure enough I found the fullest the faith and courage from God to pursue my hair passions. January of 2021 I enrolled in Ogle School to get my cosmetology license because I wanted to educate myself more about the hair industry legally before becoming a professional. I graduated seven months later and received my license and I was doing so well in school my confidence and faith grew even more, which led me to be an independent hairstylist right away. I was a little nervous, but I knew I had already started my hair business and a professional background to make it. I found my first suite at my substitute teacher’s hair salon. I started with no clientele, but as I marketed through social media, accepted various clients from the salon, and styled to display my work. As time went by my skills continued to improve and my clientele grew through word of mouth and consistent marketing. I built a foundation for my career, hair extension business and hair services from the ground up and I’m now 4 years in as a professional hairstylist and business owner. Honestly this decision was the best leap of faith I ever made and I now have the work and life freedom I’ve always wanted. As I am not where I plan to be yet, but continuously learning, mastering my skills, and evolving. Every step I took to become an entrepreneur was a test from God and a part of my plan. It took a lot of focus, discipline and sacrifice and I am very thankful and grateful for all my clients, customers, and wisdom i’ve gained over the years. I look forward to meeting new clients that desire and is searching for my services, as I can not wait to serve you.

The beauty of being a professional hairstylist is a blessing because I help women look and feel the their best. My job resonates with me on a personal level because I am a woman and know how looking good and feeling good can impact my daily life and important moments of life such as birthdays, weddings, and more. Being a part of the creation of beautiful memories and enhancing women’s beauty is my unique way of serving my purpose.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Becoming an independent hair professional journey was not smooth, but it was helpful that I’ve done people’s hair before starting my hairstylist career. It took a major mindset shift starting out and I knew all thoughts of fear and limiting beliefs could not exist if I wanted to be successful. I already had my social media pages created and during school all the way until I opened shop I posted consistently. I built a small community there first and then I launched my website so clients could shop for hair extensions and book my services. I consistently posted in hair groups, replied to people seeking the services I offered and asked for hair models to display my work. I knew if I stayed consistent my clientele would grow. Most importantly customer service and satisfying my clients was a valuable habit I created from the beginning.
