Today we’d like to introduce you to Keidrain Brewster.
Hi Keidrain, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I did 13 years in the Texas Department of criminal justice. Once I was released I worked various warehouse jobs until I decided to get my CDL. Once I drove trucks for a year I decided to jump out on my own and purchased my own one-ton dually truck and a trailer. Things took off from there. I eventually was able to grow my business and branch out to purchasing semi trucks as well. During this time I was able to publish two books, From the Rec Yard to the Streets and From the Streets to the Suites which debuted as the number one best seller on Amazon. Now I spend my time traveling the country and speaking to inmates in various prisons so I can spread the message that REFORM is possible. I call this the REFORM movement and it is my life purpose to tell as many as I can that just because you come from a place of darkness doesn’t mean you have to stay there.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road. Aside from the mental and emotional struggles that come with re-entering society and then in entrepreneurship as well I also had to face all kinds of obstacles in business. It is rough out there trying to build something from the ground up and having no real knowledge or background in business. However, it was important to me to keep fighting, because I had invested everything. As cliche as it sounds, quitting was not an option. I had invested everything I had so I was all in.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I own a trucking company called Brewster Logistics LLC. Although that started as my primary focus, I now focus on the nonprofit organization that I started called From the Rec Yard to the Streets. The mission is to provide resources, CDL training, and mentorship to inmates coming home from prison. I want anyone like me that came from a background like mine to know that a beautiful life is attainable no matter how ugly the past was. I am known for spearheading the Big Reform movement, which is what I call what I am doing. Prison is a punishment and we all understand that but it should also be a place where a man can reform and come home a better person. That is what this is all about. I am most proud of the lives that have been changed, it makes me feel good that I was able to fire up that spark that wasn’t there before in so many individuals.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
Finding a mentor is basically about the industry you are in. Find people that are willing and able to teach you what they know and have learned. What worked for me was just asking questions and getting to know the way my industry worked inside and out.
