Today we’d like to introduce you to Keith Braggs.
Keith, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I grew up like most people… POOR! All of my school pics, that I can remember, were of me with NO HAIRCUT! My mother never had the funds to get me groomed, so I always stayed naturally nappy. I got my 1st pair of clippers at the age of 11 or 12. I began cutting my hair and then, friend’s hair after. I kept barbering, even after entering prison in 2004. I was even the prison barber for over 1,800 inmates. After my release, I went full time in Barber/Cosmetology. I enrolled in M.A.T.C. (MILWAUKEE AREA TECHNICAL COLLEGE) where I received my hours and went on to obtain my BARBER/COSMETOLOGY license. I moved to Dallas in 2011 and started working at a shop in South Dallas. I worked there for six years before buying my own in Pleasant Grove in 2017… DO ME UP!!!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Some of the struggles were client stability, moving to a new city and learning new styles and advertising. The barber game is oversaturated, therefore, you have to do something different to set yourself apart from the other barbers. I spent money on advertising and trying to establish myself as a BUSINESS!
It has always been an uphill battle. I am still trying to CONTINUOUSLY advertise and keep good clients and consistent clientele. Staying on new products is big for me.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the DO ME UP story. Tell us more about the business.
My business is barber/cosmetology. I specialize in razor shaves, designs (hair art) and customer service. I’m known for my flexible hours. I am in the shop from 8 a.m. until 7 p.m. My Barbershop is a newly built shop with a comfortable atmosphere. It is family friendly and in a secure area of Pleasant Grove. I feel like I am most proud of my professionalism and my staff that I employ. Everyone is licensed and knowledgeable about whatever service we provide. What sets me apart from all others is the ability to do great work at a reasonable price. I am also proud of my dedication to my Pleasant Grove community.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
There is NO GOOD LUCK OR BAD LUCK (in my opinion). There’s only GOD and what is already written. God had led me to Dallas to fulfill what He has laid before me. Luck is for those that don’t believe GOD is in control. I’ve always known He is the driver and I’m the vessel. He has blessed me to be able to have a business filled with great employees and clients.
