Today we’d like to introduce you to Keldrick Scott.
Keldrick, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Originally, I wanted to start a studio, but non-traditional marketing has always kind of been my go to whenever I start a new venture. So, it struck me that the best way to get the name out would be to make a compilation album with various local artists and genres.
That’s when I came up with the whole “Breakin’ Barriers, Buildin’ Bonds,” thing. We ended up putting that out in August of 2014. Through the process, I met so many musicians and artists who needed to not only make music but get it out there. The compilation album was so well received, that it just made sense to get behind these guys and do more than just record their music. That’s pretty much how Gitmo was born.
Today, we’ve made it as far as we have to due to the team of people that got behind Gitmo and everyone’s drive, patience, and persistence. In the music industry, money is a long game. The turn around isn’t overnight. We usually average about two years between when we start a project and when we see a profit.
Has it been a smooth road?
Absolutely not. It’s been the opposite of a smooth road. Projects are expensive and you can’t stay in business without turning a profit. Well, you can’t turn a profit when you try to help everyone. It took me a while to realize that I had to be more selective about who I brought into the fold.
What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of? What sets you apart from others?
Gitmo Music. We’re a record label that specializes in releasing music from, mostly, local artists. We’ve produced hip hop, R&B, punk rock, comedy, and acoustic music. We’re known for the amount of releases that we’ve put out with, literally, no backing. At one point, we released an album a month for 18 consecutive months.
I am most proud of how we’ve survived for six years being a solely independent entity, but that’s still peanuts in the life of the majors. I plan on Gitmo sticking around until well after I am gone. We’re proud of that foundation and we think it’s one of the things that sets us apart.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
One of my personal mantras is from Thomas Jefferson: “The harder I work, the more luck I seem to have.”
