Today we’d like to introduce you to Kell and Julie Curtis.
Wheelhouse Marketing & PR started in 2004, formed by Managing Partner Kell and joined by his wife, Julie, as President and CEO in 2011.
Both Julie and Kell’s career paths have followed working in the media, the entertainment industry as well as working with various agencies.
With Kell’s background in traditional PR and Social Media and Julie’s focus on branding, sponsorships and sponsorship evaluation, the two were able to create and develop a business that is versatile, with the ability to customize clients’ needs.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Definitely not. The world is changing and moving at a faster pace now. It’s hard to fathom social media was not really around when we started in 2004. I was faxing press releases during those early days for the love of God. Not having all of our eggs in one PR basket has been our greatest success. It’s allowed us to work with companies of all sizes and needs.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
We have three core competency “buckets” which include: 1) Marketing, Branding and PR. 2) Sponsorship Strategy & Activation 3) Experiential Marketing & Execution. One of the things that set us apart, is that we truly believe in pushing the envelope when it comes to consumer interaction, and when I say consumer interaction, that isn’t just with the property or product, it’s the impression and experience they have with the sponsor AND the property AND the product. We always ask ourselves, “how would we want to experience this? what would make it meaningful and special?” and therein lies our answer.
What were you like growing up?
Julie: My mother said I was “strong-willed”, but in creative ways. It’s interesting how that has served me well as an adult. I owe it to her for allowing me to be the most imaginative I could be, but giving me just the right amount of guardrails in order to focus my path in the right direction.
Kell: I grew up in a very competitive environment – my Father played professional football and was a high school football coach and my Mother was an entrepreneur – owning a dress shop. I think her entrepreneurial spirit set me on the path, early on, to owning my own business….and it’s balanced with still being very competitive, yet a team player.
