Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelly Flowers.
Kelly, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
In early 2018, a group of passionate and talented senior female leaders within the technology sector coalesced around a shared vision and desire – To Create a Sisterhood to Educate, Support and Foster Opportunities for Women in the Technology Sector. We formed Women Leading Technology; a non-profit organization and technology sorority focused on encouraging and supporting women to enter and succeed in the technology sector, both as functional technology experts and as leaders in the field. We actively embrace participation in STEM and S.T.E.A.A.M disciplines.
As a result of our rapid expansion, we are now looking to partner with like-minded organizations willing to provide both financial and non-financial support to allow us to further our mission to support women entering the technology sector. We have a desire to grow rapidly to become the benchmark network dedicated to supporting the educational and career development of women. We want to be the first choice for young women who are looking for a supportive environment to enhance their experience in the technology sector. Through our commitment to excellence and dedication to the betterment of our sisters, our communities and ourselves, we are well on the way to achieve this goal. Our ultimate ambition is to become a global organization with reach into all levels of education and influence on career planning services for young women.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Absolutely not. Starting an organization from the ground up is extremely challenging. There are a lot of moving parts, especially when you are a non-profit. The most challenging part is getting volunteers that believe in your vision and that are just as dedicated to your cause. I’ve lost some talented people along the way and I’ve gained some amazing people that are aligned with the mission and the vision and I am extremely grateful.
Please tell us about Women Leading Technology.
Women Leading Technology also known as Omega Sigma Lambda. We are a non-profit technology sorority. We are more than just a technology organization for women, we are a true sisterhood. Omega Sigma Lambda is a Women Leading Technology Sorority which represents everything women in the technology industry is all about.
We are a huge supporter of STEM and S.T.E.A.A.M Education. Helping young ladies at an early age to map out a future in the technology industry.
We are known for providing funding for deserving young ladies from elementary through high school to attend the Girl Scouts STEM Camp of Excellence in Dallas.
I am extremely proud of the overwhelming love we receive from individuals when they hear about our cause. A lot of people have been eager to help push our cause. We have an exceptional group of ladies on our team. Most
importantly we have some amazing sponsors.
The one thing that sets us apart is the official sorority piece. We are a true sisterhood. We are an uplifting organization that is all about helping our sisters achieve their goals, we want them to be a success, and they know their sisters are always here for them. We are also building our sisterhood around the young girls. Our motto is “Women Are Stronger Together,
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
The best quality and characteristic is always being my vulnerable, corky, authentic self. My favorite quote is by Dr. Seuss. “Today you are You, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is Youer than you'”
I have made mistakes and will probably continue to make them, but I always do my best to learn from them and to work on doing better.
