Meet Kelly McNett of Lit Photography in Prosper

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelly McNett.

Kelly, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
The phrase a picture is worth a thousand words describes my long time fascination with photography. The story an image may convey captures an idea much more quickly and effectively than the written word. Sharing candid shots of our family of four in their day to day living brought several requests from family and friends to photograph weddings and other special occasions. After our move to Texas, I enrolled in a few photography classes at Collin College to sharpen my skills and professionalism while working part-time as a photography assistant at a portrait studio. Soon I advanced as a second photographer and was offered another part-time job with an editorial photographer.

This year I took the leap to focus solely on my business. Lit Photography helps people tell their story by capturing candid and real moments. I love assisting others in leaving a little piece of their history behind for generations to come.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
What is an adventure without unexpected challenges and obstacles along the way? Balancing career with family, the fear factor of starting up a new business, entering the field with a unique and competitive edge, acquiring state of the art equipment and helping others see the world differently from the view of a camera lens to name a few. The most recent struggle is keeping it positive and the momentum going during the pandemic. Small, start-up businesses like Lit Photography definitely feel the crunch. I’ve been fortunate to learn from the best and receive good advice while working hard and trying to get my name out there.

Please tell us about Lit Photography.
Lit Photography specializes in wedding and family portraiture. My favorite shots are those that show each individual’s personality and tell a meaningful story. Paying attention to detail, excellent customer service and great communication are key to success and client satisfaction.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
When I was young, I was enamored with a photograph on a wall in my mother’s bedroom of her in her wedding gown. I loved to look at her wedding album and thought she was famous because of her wedding announcement in the local newspaper. That image has stuck with me throughout the years because of its elegance and beauty, and it is one of the reasons that I love bridal and wedding sessions today.
