Today we’d like to introduce you to Kendra Henderson.
Kendra, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
After coming home from college (Prairie View A&M University), I could not find employment anywhere! My older brother, Dr. Marlon Henderson, who owns Henderson Orthodontic’s in Duncanville TX & Grand Prairie TX, hired and trained me to work with him as an Orthodontic Assistant. While working as an Orthodontic Assistant, I learned how to bond brackets properly without damaging the patient’s teeth. Years later, after working in Cooperate America for several years, I was scrolling through Instagram and I saw someone with a small little tooth gem on their tooth. I did research on the products that were used to apply the teeth gems and realized that this was something that I already had years of knowledge in. I quit Cooperate America and, starting placing myself in a position to become my own boss.
Has it been a smooth road?
The road to becoming successful in my business has not at all been difficult. The salon where I work, (Real Hair Beauty Bar) has most definitely been influential in the success of Gems by Ken. Especially the salon owner, Larry Spencer. He had not heard anything about people doing teeth gems but, he still took a chance on me, and to him, I will always be especially grateful.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Gems by Ken story. Tell us more about the business.
My business is Gems by Ken. I specialize in teeth gems and jewelry and teeth whitening. I am known for customizing teeth with gems and jewelry and providing advanced teeth whitening sessions that can take your smile from one shade lighter in each session. The main thing that I am the proudest of is; the fact that I took a chance on myself and was not afraid to step out on faith and follow my dreams.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
In the next five years, I see myself traveling across the United States, providing teeth whitening and teeth gem services. I eventually would like to begin training individuals on how to become a Tooth Gem and Jewelry Artist, once I feel like I have populated the DFW market.
