Today we’d like to introduce you to Kendrell Turner.
Kendrell, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Well, I’ve always had a special place in my heart for music. Once I got to high school, I started to diversify the artists I listened to which lead my love for the art. After high school, I went to college in hopes of one day being a Physical therapist.
Once I figured out the courses I would be required to pass as a biology major, I knew it wasn’t for me, lol. So I started looking up other majors, and I came across Mass Communication. Once I learned about the different professions that fell under the umbrella of Mass Communications, I chose to have a focus on journalism.
Being a journalist meant writing was part of my everyday routine now. Long story short, I begin writing raps and developing freestyle skills through journalism. I always could freestyle, and the homies told me I should hop in the studio. I took their advice, and once I heard my voice on a track, I was sold.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
My path has been everything except smooth. I lost my father at the age of 18 in 2011; which was also the year I began college. I believe this tragic misfortune is what ultimately lead to me having to withdraw from college. It was like all the time I spent in college was the time I was trying to use for healing. But I wasn’t in the environment I needed to be in to heal. I needed to get away.
So I packed everything I owned into my 2004 Chrysler 300M and relocated to Dallas. This was in 2016. I had a friend who was already living her via college. He had an on-campus apartment he let me crash in cause he lived off campus with his wife. I was living rent-free for quite some time which made it easier to stay on my feet. But I eventually got kicked out and had to leave the apartment, so other students could move in.
This was when things became too hard to deal with. I was still trying to heal, and I was homeless. Most nights I spent sleeping on a friend’s couch, but I can also recall many nights sleeping in my car. I was working at Raisin Cane’s, but my bi-weekly checks barely hit $400. Eventually, I moved back to Louisiana for three months and came back to Dallas with my girlfriend to get an apartment and start making it happen out here.
Please tell us about Neaux ID.
I make music for people who enjoy good raps. I used to be known for having such great taste in music. Now I make the great tasting music.
I’d like to say I’m pretty transparent though and most people can either relate to it or they just like the feeling they can feel through my raps.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I had to start over, I honestly wouldn’t do anything different. Everything I went through prepared me for most of what I go through today.
Those nights spent sleeping in my car and doing what I had to do to survive helped build a determination and fire inside of me that nobody can put out. To see where I am now has built an amazing amount of confidence that only I can blemish.
