Hi Kenya, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started out in the pet industry extremely young. Just walking down the street to pick up my niece from school. I saw a now hiring sign on the door of a pet grooming salon and decided to walk in to apply for a summer job. I was still in high school in a small city called Shreveport Louisiana. I never would have imagined that my spur of the moment decision would have transpired into this craft and career that I love today. I wanted more for my eagerly learned craft, so I sought after a larger city. Relocated to Houston Texas to further my career and meet new people that could indeed help my craft become my own. 15 years later and I still love what I do more and more each day. Although I’ve recently relocated to Dallas Texas my eagerness to learn, to dedicate my time to my style of grooming, and educating myself each second on perfecting my skills with pets will always be my main priority!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
A smooth road is indeed far-fetched! I had to fight time and time again as unfortunate circumstances would always get in the way. It knocked me down cold many times. From mechanical issues with the grooming units, from undercharging my true worth for my skills, and also my own inner demons who told me that this hard work is not worth it! I over came that, and will continue to do so! The liberation I felt from doing something I wholeheartedly loved is what gave me the strength to keep going. My wonderful husband who’s always had my back as my biggest supporter and my teenage son who watches us strive for success day after day is what keeps my motivation strong!
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We started Fluffin’ Amazin’ Mobile Pet Grooming back in March 2020, right at the peak of Covid. Ugh, what a challenge that was to get ready to rock out and was put into quarantine, haha! But that gave me time to think about easier ways to get out there when the time came. I watched videos on blending patterns, which now I specialize in all breed patterns from Scottish Terriers to West Highland Terriers. Yes, I may be a blending perfectionist, but I have experience in all breed cats and dogs, not matter the size. I trained myself to work with pets that doesn’t have the best behavior disposition during grooming. So I’m called out a lot to work with those pets who need more time and patience. That also sets me aside from many others, as I don’t mind taking the extra mile to make sure the pet is safely and neatly done, while also using techniques to make them more comfortable with grooming. I will always try first, they deserve it just as much. Fluffin’ Amazin’ comes fully equipped to give your pets the spa day they need. Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
As much as I’d love to say yes those help me out. I must say, I stray away from it as much as possible. I am an over thinker, which makes me an obsessed perfectionist. If I look for guidance in any other way at this point in my career, I will over think, I won’t understand why I can’t round my teddy bear heads with their technique? Why did their business come easier than mine? I will obsess! So I have to think within my own brain, and look at videos and pictures of my younger self, and my work and seek guidance from there. That lets me know what I need to work on or what can I learn within my own techniques that I can grasp. Sometimes, it’s ok to be your own teacher!
