Today we’d like to introduce you to Kerri Dickey.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My passion for photography really hit when I was young. I declared that I wanted to be a photographer when I was in middle school however also had a strengths in the math and sciences and held onto both sides dearly all the way through my first few years of college where I tried bringing my right and left brains together for success. Eventually I found myself fully immersed into the sciences still loving how I could visualize and design while supporting with math and science. I graduated as the top in my class from the University of Texas Arlington with a Civil Engineering degree and having already rooted my career with an internship, continued on in the consulting world. After my second little lovely was born, my husband and I felt we could have a balance that might be better for us with me focusing on my work at home with our two kids. I mentioned the idea of photography but really hadn’t done much but sessions for friends before that. I absolutely LOVED doing it though and had been doing in here and there ever since high school where I was granted permission for independent study, to transform an unused janitor’s closet into a darkroom using my friends as models when needed. Yes, I learned old school but that deeper understanding from actual trial and error experiments really allowed my passion to go deep on different aspects of the science to the art. I don’t particularly want to do the darkroom thing again, though!
When stationed at my home I began dabbling in small mini sessions, really enjoyed it and wanted to learn and do more. I am self-taught but have a lot of drive and attention to detail which has paid off. My talents now span to newborns, seniors, weddings, and some more creative pieces too. Word of mouth and clients spreading the love via social media has really kept my calendar full and client circle expanding. I really love every part from the session to the delivery and have been blessed with exceptional people to work with.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I did have some challenges with having passions for things that are often considered quite opposite to each other, being art opposing math and science. I went to school for one thing and while I am still a licensed civil engineer and do contract work here and there, I am classified as inactive and did give that up to pursue and focus on other things. I’ve definitely seen how some value one side over the other and can hint that I threw that away but life happens, passions and priorities change and it’s been confirmed time after time that this talent and direction is a gift from God. I’m embracing it and am extremely fulfilled from following this dream, learning and mastering new things, working with both new and returning clients helping them document their story in a beautiful way. Having the opportunity to balance it all with our family has complimented other goals in our lives as well!
So, as you know, we’re impressed with KerriDickey Photography – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
KerriDickey Photography offers professional portrait and wedding photography services. Whatever the occasion, my goal and passion is to beautifully tell the story behind it. A photo can tell so much whether it’s the sweetness of a newborn or the unique graduate ready to take on the world, I want to capture it. I specialize in portraits including newborn, milestones, maternity, families, graduates and professional head shots. I also do preschool portraits working so hard and absolutely loving when their true smiles burst into light!
Wedding photography is grand passion of mine with my first being less than two years ago! I knew I’d either love it or hate it (sounds bad, but I’m sure it’s not for everyone, right?!) but I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it! My portfolio is alive and full! I offer engagement and bridal portraits in combination with the wedding day package or standalone. Wedding day photography tells the complete story beginning with detailed preparations and getting ready behind the scenes all the way to the send-off of the blissful newlyweds! I’m honored to have an amazing second photographer and friend to take on the challenge with that compliments my style and angle perfectly to collectively highlight the love from all around. Wedding galleries are truly magical especially when you see all the details and moments brought together to document that special day. It makes my heart oh so happy to share it in its entirety.
One last thing that I’m proud of as a company, is an event that I’ve initiated to be a reoccurring event with the next to occur in the spring of 2018. The draw on my heart to tell my clients’ unique story was expanded to tell the story of children with Congenital Heart Defect. This was inspired by both a client and dear friend whose children have this and are undeniably some of the most courageous kids you’d ever meet. It’s unbelievable how inspiring they are. Their cheerful hearts and their enduring strength amaze me. I provided sign-ups for a day where I offered “Portraits of Courage”. My goal was to tell their story with a short free session to ultimately deliver two or more portraits. The goal of the first was to document their physical heart and that unique courage by showing their scar and/or “beads of courage” (all provided via donations by many generous souls where each bead documents milestones of bravery this child has shown/experienced and tells a colorful and original story). The goal of the second was to simply portray their regular, beautiful, contagious, smiles and loveable energy. While it is a gift to others, I truly feel like the one who is blessed. I encourage potentials for the event to follow my Facebook page or tell their friends as there is a limited number of spots and they filled up extremely fast.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
The future of KerriDickey Photography will be a growing wedding portfolio at a steady but manageable rate and continuing to serve my clients with portrait sessions striving to tell their story and document their lives in simple and beautiful ways.
I’m continually learning and trying new techniques to better myself and trade which shows through my photos. I’ve also tasted a bit of creativity for superhero sessions which I also plan to offer as a limited time special in the early spring of 2018.
I will continue to offer seasonal specials including the spring Bluebonnet Mini sessions and Autumn Mini sessions.
