Meet Kert Platner of Times Ten Cellars in East Dallas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kert Platner.

Kert, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Times Ten Cellars opened for business on August 2nd 2005. We purchased the property at 6324 Prospect Avenue in Dallas. The building was built in 1945 to serve as the US Post Office. It is a beautiful cast stone building. Times Ten Cellars is a full production “Urban Winery” and has twice been listed in USA Today as among the Top 10 Urban Wineries in the United States. We produce wines from grapes grown in California, Washington, Oregon and Texas. We planted a vineyard 20 miles South of Alpine, Texas in 2004. It is the highest elevation vineyard and without a doubt one of the most beautiful in Texas. Times Ten Cellars functions as a wine bar, winery, event venue and wholesale wine company. We have become engrained in the fabric of East Dallas by offering our space for school fundraisers and countless other nonprofit entities events. We are fortunate to have a nice comfortable gathering space. Our wines are approachable and affordable. Our service model is the same. Times Ten Cellars was the first “Urban Winery/wine bar” in Dallas. We are proud of what we have become in the City of Dallas.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Some of the largest challenges were dealing with the City and what they wanted to call us early on. We are not a bar. We are not a restaurant. In fact, the city of Dallas didn’t even have the designation “winery” in their list of things we could be. We struggled with several factors getting that worked. We were very fortunate to buy our building so we been blessed with affordable rents since we rent from ourselves. It is the lifeblood of our business.

Please tell us about Times Ten Cellars.
Times Ten Cellars has hosted hundreds of “life” events. From birthday parties, baby showers, engagements, wedding ceremonies, rehearsal dinners and even life celebrations. We have become the go to for local neighborhood associations to host their meetings. We host school and church events. It has been amazing to see our space be shared for life’s greatest moments.

The other thing we are very proud of is our staff. Many of them have been with us for over 10 years. We have watched their lives be impacted positively by our existence. It is very gratifying!

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Not a thing!
