Today we’d like to introduce you to Kevin Brown.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
Always have had an interest in photography. Had a darkroom at age 10. By 15 I was shooting for the small-town newspaper in the town where I grew up. By the time I was in college I’d worked for three different newspapers.
Fast forward to 2018, and I’m proud to say that I’m staying very busy as a freelance commercial photographer. I shoot for corporate, agency, and editorial clients located all around the country. While most of my work is done in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, I do travel and shoot all over the U.S.
I rarely shoot for individual consumers, so photographing brides, babies, and families is really not my thing. Most of my work finds me in corporate or industrial environments.
Please tell us about your art.
I’m a photographer, so photography is my art. While much of my work is done in corporate or industrial environments, artistic expression is still a very big part of every shoot that I do. Something as simple and basic as a headshot relies on lighting, use of color, composition, and collaboration with the subject, all of which play a role in the final result.
I enjoy the departures from the corporate and agency assignments as well. In these instances, I really feel liberated to capture images that, hopefully, captivate the viewer in some fashion. I particularly enjoy street photography and also shooting people. Areas of the south, particularly New Orleans, are very special to me. I really feel a connection with that part of the country and the culture there.
Interestingly, I also love industrial shoots and find them to be great opportunities to be artistic. Whether I’m on a construction site, shooting on an oil rig, or photographing a manufacturing process, I love finding ways to showcase these subjects in an artistic fashion.
I get a lot of personal satisfaction in the work that I create, almost regardless of what it is. Some shoots are definitely more rewarding – creatively -than others, and I always love it when the stars align, so-to-speak, and the light, the subject, and the setting all come together in a way that allows for great photos.
As an artist, how do you define success and what quality or characteristic do you feel is essential to success as an artist?
I’d define success as a combination of having the ability to do what you love day-in and day-out while making a good living at it. I’m thankful to be able to say that I’m successful in that regard.
I’d attribute my success to persistence, good communication skills, the ability to adapt to change, a good attitude, staying relevant, having a good web presence, and continuing to always strive to be better at the core of what I do, which is shooting photos.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
My work is scattered across hundreds, probably thousands, of customer websites across the country as well as in a significant number of print pieces. All that said, the best way people can see my work is to visit my website.
