Today we’d like to introduce you to Kevin Myers.
Kevin, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I am a board-certified orthopedic surgeon with fellowship training and subspecialty certification in Sports Medicine. My practice includes the surgical and non-surgical treatment of the knee, shoulder, elbow, hip and hip arthroscopy, as well as treating athletes and patients of all activity levels. I was born in Texas and grew up mainly in San Antonio. My father was a pilot in the Air Force so we had the opportunity to live in many interesting places along the way, the most memorable being Alaska, before making our way back home to Texas. I graduated from Rice University in Houston and received my medical degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.
I then went on to complete a residency in Orthopedic Surgery at the Northwell Health System in New Hyde Park, NY. I was fortunate to be selected to attend the orthopedic sports medicine fellowship program at the world-renowned Andrews Sports Medicine and Orthopedic Center in Birmingham, AL. During my fellowship, I treated professional athletes from the NFL, NBA, MLB, WWE, as well as athletes from the University of Alabama. I also served as the team physician for the University of West Alabama and was an associate team physician for the Birmingham Barons AA baseball team and the Alabama Ballet. I then was able to return to the DFW area and joined OrthoTexas, a group of amazing physicians and surgeons with similar training and focus on patient care.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The road has certainly been tough along the way – fourteen years of rigorous academics and training, intense focus on developing surgical technical skills, long hours in residency, and moving across the country multiple times. I wouldn’t have it any other way, though; each step has led me to a rewarding and fulfilling career. I am able to help people get back to the things they enjoy, restore function, and improve quality of life with direct intervention. My favorite moments during the day are when my patients “graduate” from their post-op recovery and I clear them to return to all activities without restriction. I would not have been able to make it to this point without the support of my amazing wife and family, who have been there for me every step of the way.
We’d love to hear more about your practice.
My practice is OrthoTexas – Orthopedics and Sports Medicine. We are a group comprised of subspecialty trained orthopedic surgeons with all aspects of the musculoskeletal system covered: knee, hip, shoulder, hand, elbow, spine, joint replacement and arthritis, foot & ankle. We offer comprehensive and compassionate care with the office, x-ray, PT, MRI, and surgical facilities all together on site. We have three locations: Plano, Frisco, and Carrollton. What sets our group apart is that you know you will be seeing a board-certified specialist – an orthopedic physician who has specific training and experience in your condition. We also have walk-in hours every morning to accommodate urgent issues and are often available for same-day appointments in the case of an injury.
What were you like growing up?
I’ve always been physically active and grew up playing a variety of sports, from football and basketball to rugby in college. Currently, I am enjoying snow skiing and wake surfing with my wife and two children. Exercise and sporting activities continue to be an important part of my life, so I empathize with my patients who are unable to perform the activities that they desire. Growing up, I was also quite inquisitive and sought to learn how everything worked and functioned around me – the human body, various machines, appliances, etc. These traits have really helped me throughout my training and career. The field of orthopedics is always advancing, always improving. My focus is on providing the best patient care and achieving the best outcomes possible.
