Today we’d like to introduce you to Khadijah Williams.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Khadijah. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Well, I grew up in a small city in Louisiana, but I moved to Garland, TX in 2012, where I finished my high school career and then went on to college for a bit in Tyler, TX. I started college, not even really knowing what direction I planned on going in life. I really wasn’t focused on school at all, and my grades started to show, so I dropped out of school and moved back to my hometown of Monroe, LA to “figure things out.”
When I moved back home, I started off working at American Eagle, Bath and Body Works and The Underground. I literally had three jobs. I was working hard trying to save and move into my own place because I was living with my aunt at the time, but even with those three jobs, I didn’t feel like I was making enough, so I went looking for a better job. I applied at MAC maybe four times and never got a call back, but I ended up getting a job at Belk and that is where I got my start in makeup. I worked for them for almost three years before I decided to quit and become a Freelance MUA / Lash Technician in 2018. I have been working from home for going on two years now doing makeup/lashes.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has been anything BUT a smooth journey. I’ve had a lot of struggles, but what I struggled the most with was ‘charging my worth and mixing business with pleasure. When I say that I mean like basically giving full services away for a little to nothing to friends, and family or even people I didn’t even really deal with on a daily basis out of fear that the only way people would support if I charged them less or offer a free service in order for them to come back. When in reality, no one loses anything but me. When I would literally slave myself for a whole day only charging $25 for a face & $50 for lashes and only making $200 AFTER slaving for over 12 hours, that was something I had to pray about. I learned quickly to take my business serious before I expected anyone else to. People that truly appreciate your craft are going to respect whatever rules and guidelines you lay down and I had to realize that I didn’t even want clients that weren’t genuine, consistent and not forced.
Tell us more about the business.
Khadijah Kasha Beaute is a upcoming beauty brand. I am known for my Volume Lash Extensions and Soft Glam Makeup Look. I am proud of the growth of my work since my start date, I get better after each service, but I am most proud of my company’s consistency since I decided to become a full time entrepreneur, there has not been a month where I haven’t gained a new client. I believe I am different from others because I literally am my brand I eat, sleep, and breathe everything beauty. I build actual relationships with clients, so when they come to me, I already know what they need so it is like they can let go and trust when they come in and leave back out not only will they look better on the outside, but they feel good on the inside too. My clients will tell you, I got them lol I got my clients calling me over to curl their hair and I don’t even do hair, but we have a bond.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I don’t believe in luck at all, but it is funny you guys asked that because before now, I always felt so “unlucky.” I always wanted someone just to come to find me give me a chance until I realized I had to put in the work and my work would show itself and if nobody gave me a chance, I would create my own table, so that is what I did.
