Today we’d like to introduce you to Kierra Suggs.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Kierra. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’m a Kierra, a Medical retired Air Force veteran from St. Louis Mo. I have been in Dallas for two years now. I’m a master loctician and barber in training. My journey started in 2014. I was doing Locs (Dreadlocks) for five years, but just as a hobby.. In 2014 I was in a domestic situation that leads to me losing my freedom and benefits. I promised myself after that 120 days stay I had to make a change. I started working multiple jobs to get my kids life back in order. tone point I was working at Red lobster, Torrid, and a salon to make ends meet. In 2017 I started to lose my oldest son to the streets of St. Louis. I decided to relocate my whole family so I could get back on track. But the transition has been ruff. First finding a house, building client, then my kids fighting the move, I was working in Dallas and St. Louis to stay afloat. but ended up losing our home, our belongings, and car due to my legal matters. We were homeless for a year. Just recently in September, we got home. I’ve had back to back surgeries and all. But never have I given up, I stayed in school, I kept working, and I’m continuing to build my brand and raise my kids the best I can.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Yes, extremely hard. Between working so many jobs at once on two bad hips and a destroyed ankle, homelessness, surgeries, depression, no help nor support from family or friends. This journey to success made me want to quit. Thank god I’m determine.
Please tell us about your practice.
I specialize in dreads. I‘m a Loc Surgeon. When other Locticians say they can’t fix a clients dreadlocks, I say I CAN. I can do pretty much any and everything involving dreads. I make my own product and all. I competed in several categories and Texas Barber college placing in First and Second place. I won 2nd place in the Dreadlock competition at the 2019 Texas International Hair and Trade Show. Also won 2nd place in the Traditional cut category at the 2019 Primelady Barber Extravaganza. Hardwork does pay off!!
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
having determination, the will to take a loss and bust your hump to get it back, and cutting ties to make u better.
